Default *** Stormin2u's 2009 AKRCC "Ares" Comp Truck ****

AKRCC "Ares" Chassis
TLT Axles ~ All the goodies
Losi XXX-T 100mm shocks
Axial Transmission
VF Dig
Mamba Max ESC
11.1 Elite Lipo ~ CheapBatteryPacks.com
35 Turn Warrior ~ JP Custom RC
Hitec Servos
DX3R Radio

Got my "Ares" chassis from "Mr. AKRCC" himself Rocky Tooyak in the mail today.

It was carefully packaged and contained the skid, chassis side plates, cross members, hardware and a really nicely done very complex AKRCC decal shown in the zip lock.

The skid features a machined center on the bottom of the plate and a nice shoulder cut that covers the chassis side plates.

It has a kinda cool "carbon fiber" top surface. But most notably it is very nicely machined and super slippery.

I used a little tape and a guideline to help get my tranny alignment.

Locating the tranny for equal length drive shafts by using the drive unit and my alignment line.

After making a templat from the bottom of the trans I aligned it using my marks and the line.

I used counter sunk screws for ease of removal with my small cordless drill.

This picture really shows the quality of a AKRCC skid.

Well that's it for tonight.

Hey rbl it's funny to talk about a skid but AKRCC has a really nice skid. :nice it has a finish to it and the "carbon fiber" faux finish on the top is cool.

Hey Rick, your "Ares" thread and video is the reason I'm building a "Ares" I really liked your build and better yet I liked the handling. Got this Monday from Rocky and pretty much knew how mine was going to look in many ways a lot like yours.

I got a little work done last night on my AKRCC "Ares" build.

I bolted up the side plates to the drive unit and skid plate every thing fit nicely.

Then mounted a little tab to lock the chassis basket to the building jig.

I locked the axles in at the magic 12 1/2'' then located the chassis perfectly centered each way before locking it down for a 50/50 lower and upper link set up. I also made a little jig to clock my drive shafts.

I've have plenty of room to relocate the dig shift servo to the right side and get it much lower and have a nice straight shot on my linkage I'm real happy about that.

I can remove my motor for maintenance or change pinions and adjust gear mess with the motor in the chassis and that's a plus in my book.

The Axial body I chose to run the XC-1 looks like a really good fit. I'll be able to trim or bend about a 1 1/4" and still be legal
@ 12 1/2" and have it sit in the "sweet spot" and slam it hard.

This one is for Rubbaneck who if you missed his "brushed motor seminar" two weeks ago on "RCC Friday Night Live" starring "Jason and Entourage" he mentioned many times his favorite brushes for crawling motors these are mine I stocked up and now you can get yours.

I'll be building some "Delrin" lower links using JeepinDougs "Drill Bushing" next.

Thanks man for stopping by. Regarding the aluminum tranny case you'll have to do some "Dremel" work on them to get a "VF" dig to fit but you'll like the solidness of it and it makes the whole drive unit acts as a motor heatsink.

Love your jig set up Norm. Look like everythings going together pretty smooth. Got a special GC you like to run? I see orange in the future for paint.

It takes a little time to set up but really helps you to get good link measurements.

Ground clearance I like to be just under 3'" depending on tire height. I've been running Panther Cougars.

Just to many choices on tires we'll wait and see what works so we'll start the season on our "Cougars".

The Rovers have the most history at this point IMO of the 5.5" height group.

I'm sure at 5.5" I'll have to limit the shocks a little to run a tall tire. In fact bigger tires = stiffer springs preload.

With a new chassis it means making some shake down runs to see what it likes Greg's input is important at that point..

Looks good Norm. Now we just need the snow to miss us today and the remaining snow to melt.
