Default Whack-Jack/ RC4WD R2DIII Dual Dig Buildup

Well guys, here it goes, this is kind of an odd build/reveiw of the RC4WD R2DIII Dual Dig Tranny...First off, the tranny looks great, full bearings added throughout, and delrin shift bushings, for those of us that have a 4 or more channel radio, this tranny is easy to setup, just need a long enough/open enough/wide enough chassis to set it up ...For fun I have decided to build the truck around this tranny, and I will be building a linkage for it, for those that have a 3 channel radio with 3 position 3rd channel...I will also be throwing on the test RC4WD Rocklins to try them out since my bully is down having some motor service...Current wheels and tires are only for mockup

Specs:
Blackjack Chassis (opened up) Custom skid by my bro-in-law
Mini LST Shocks
LOADED TLT axles
5995 Steering
All others...I will update as I build

Let me know what you guys think, I am building this truck with no plans, just go as I go..

Here are some startup pics, I will be working on the dig linkage tomorrow night

A preview of the rocklins to test!!

Next to the HB Rovers

Thanks man, I was waiting for either you or Rizzo to pop in on this, what shock oil did you run for these things...I like the artculation...somewhat minimal of 3-4 inches just need to figure out the right oil, also, did you run the stock 3 racing springs?

yep i ran 60wt and the stock black springs. short articulation is where its at, I'd rather have a balanced rig that''' lift tires over shit rather than flex out and fall into holes and cracks.

Well, had some issues with my prototype for the shift linkage, have to run to the store tomorrow, and brainstorm some ideas, I got it built, but not happy with it, came up with a new, sleeker design in my head, just need the parts to finish it, then wire the truck, throw some driveshafts in it, and run it...more updates tomorrow

That chassis looks to be a perfect fit for the Dual dig set-up.

Keep up the good work on this. Can't wait to see how you get it workin.

Tires look to new. Get to runnin those things.

I agree, the tires are WAY too new, I had some issues with a motor on my bully, so I am waiting for the replacement to come, thats why I havent tested them, so once this truck is done, hopefully today or tomorrow, I will get those tires testin!!

Well, I got a linkage done that I am happy with, keeps tension on the shift rod when in 4wd, allows rod to shift into front or rear lock, and keep the opposite driveshaft turning...I mounted the servo so the linkage is as straight as I can keep it, I still have to build a mount for the other side of the servo to keep it solid, build drivelines, and wire it up, then test...Still have to trim off the excess rod, and clean it up, I think it will work just fine....I also think I will flip the chassis 180* to get the motor up front...

The pics

Had a chance to run the truck today, everything works just as planned, the only issue I had was disengaging the dig, getting it to go back into 4wd, but some adjustments of the spring stiffness will fix that issue...

The Rocklins did amazing, it was about 15degrees at testing time, and a buddy of mine running the claws was struggling up lines these sticky rocklins were walking up, they were also crawling lines that I have been able to do with the HB Rovers, but to be honest, it is a tossup between the HB Rovers and these tires, the rocklins did seem to sidehill better than the rovers... RC4WD really hit the nail on the head with the compund though, these tires stick great, sidehill awesome, and climb like crazy!!

So you gonna run this rig at the next comp, or will the bully be running by then?

The bully will be running, but I think I will run this, it did pretty well, just wish it had more wheelspeed

Do you have room for a brushed motor on this set up?

No, I wish, maybe with a different chassis, or widened skid plate, this is the only downside to this tranny, hopefully they can make a shorter more compact unit, I would love to stick my hh35t in this

Eddie, I think the low wheelspeed is because of the crawlmaster in it, I am running a 3cell right now, but will be sporting the 4 cell out of the bully for the comp, and maybe a small gear change ;)

The tranny worked flawlessly this weekend at the comp, shifted great, might need a stiffer spring for re-engaging 4wd, had to wiggle the steering to get it to pop back in, but not an issue with the tranny, just need a stiffer spring on the linkage....

Truck need some work...i will leave it at that

The rocklins did well, but conditions were wet, and the rocks were slick, I think on dry rock (like i tested them on before) they would shine, they will continue to get beat on soon
