Del Monte's KOtC rock racer http://img8.imageshack.us/img8/2914/img0434aya.jpg Here's my new rock racer for the first ever King of the Compound event. http://www.rccrawler.com/forum/competitions/170799-king-compound.html The event is basically KOH adapted for the RC world. We will be racing somewhere around a 1/2 mile track with jumps, wide open sections, and technical crawling all mixed in. http://img4.imageshack.us/img4/8131/img0440e.jpg The frame initially build as a full droop competition rig by Socal's own Brian Phillips. I've been a big fan of his tube work for a while, so when I decided to build a rock racer, I knew Brian was the guy to talk to. We were able to redesign the shock and link mounts to accomodate the geometry and travel I wanted in a rock race rig. The result? A rig that can do 20+ and still crawl the RCP arch  Specs: TLT axles Axial Trans w/slipper RCP's stainless ring and pinions RCP's CVDs RCP's stainless axle C's and lockouts Hitec 5995 Losi 4" shocks J Concepts Tense Beadlocks wrapped with Losi Tires Slash 12T Motor with XL-5 esc (for now) Geared 22/87 |
That looks good. Pretty cool you can do that speed and the arch without changing your setup. |
Right on Jake, that looks pretty tight"thumbsup""thumbsup" I see you've already tested the cage:ror: |

I think I slid it upside down like 30ft on the concrete floor at RCX. It was fun fully drifting around the RCP booth too. So far in testing I've destroyed 2 RC4wd plastic rims and snapped an RCP rear axle truss :twisted: I want this thing to be bulletproof for the race. |
What do you think about the Tense beadlocks? They look pretty cool, IMO. |
awesome! i want one! i doubt ill make it to the king of the compound event but i still wanna build a tuber rock racer. |

Happy now? I think I climbed it 3 or 4 times that day. Coming down the other side was fun with no drag brake... weeeeee! |
wish i could make it this weekend jake, give em hell man! |
so how did she do jake? |

With no dig and no weight in the wheels, I had to drive the rocks pretty carefully. The berg guys were able to go flat out through some of the technical sections, and it cost me some time. I was a lot faster in the open sections though, and the rig looks a lot cooler  It was awesome seeing the rig rip through the desert and soak up the little stuff with ease. The rig ran pretty flawlessly in the 2.2 race, but I wanted to race more so I threw some 1.9s on it and entered the 2nd class... bad idea  I blew up the XL-5 about 100 yards into the race and then called it an day. Here's some vid of the epic battle between me and lil' john. Nabil and his berg were just behind us at the time, making for some great racing. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nCqqL5zxoQI I've got a ton of pics and an update with a few new parts I whipped up for the rig, but that'll have to wait until I have some time to upload everything -Jake |
awesome!! hopefully soon ill have one of my own. 8) |
The rig looks great! I see your looking for a 4wd buggy, are you planning on an independent suspended buggy? |

Yep, I want to play around with an IFS setup. I'll probably end up running a solid rear axle though. It will be hard to make a rig much faster then my current racer, but I want to play with some ifs ideas that I have in mind. I can't wait to see your rock beetle run, it looks pretty cool |
Jake... Your rig was great look'n!.......Judging from the vids I've seen.(I was too busy work'n to enjoy you guys run'n) It handled perfect also... Of all the video that Mr the Red got, your rig is one of the sweetest look'n(scale wise) on the course that day!!..... |
ill have mine within a week Jake! |
Looks fun what wheelbase are u guys running.? |
the rock racer guidelines here in Vegas are gonna have the same WB and width specs as 2.2 class. so mine will be 12-12.5" |
Mine is just a little over a 12" wheelbase. Handles well though... I get an update together on this rig. I need to clean it up for some racing at the WCC next weekend 8) |
