Default Time to order shocks

Ok I have spent some time reading thru a # of threads on shocks (was hpoing to find a faq on them but no go unless I missed it).

In any case I am down to my last needed parts to assemble my first(will call it an experiment, lol) rig. From what I gather a 4" shock seems to be the most comon/my best option for a shock. But what recomendations do you guys have on a shock that has a good assortment of springs and an adjustable body(I am used to playing with real coilovers, not these tiny things)

Thanks for any input(and I think a faq for shocks is the one thing that is missing as in whats out there)

Any threaded aluminum bodied shock will work, alot of guys use replacement shocks for the Maxx trucks. Some leak more then others, but a little teflon tape will fix that.

I've always had good luck with Associated shocks. I have some that are about 16 years old and they still work great and still hold oil. Replacement parts are easy to come by at most LHS too. You can custom build them by mix-n-matching shock bodies and shafts to have your own setup.

If you stick with the major manufactures that have plenty of replacement parts out in the market then you'll be better off.

I have really liked the Integy MSR4 piggies...<<<The irony... I use losi orange springs on them and they seem to work well. I have also used the touring car shocks as well...

Yeah gotta love the AE shocks...they do last a long time, easy to get parts for, mix n match for compressed and extended lengths, and their springs are a bit smaller outer diameter for easier tire clearance during flex and turn.

BTW, that's what's still on my old electric Stampede.

I have always run Losi or Associated. Like toyofast said the parts are easily obtainable. Any hobby shop worth its salt will have spare parts sitting on the shelf.

SO here is one of the shocks I was looking at

http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...?&I=LXVH03&P=7

Its got the length I want but the shock body is not threaded for adjustability

Here is another one but I can't seem to find any type of spring selection (like the first shock)

http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...?&I=LXANU1&P=7

Now here is another shock. The HPI seems to have a decent selection of springs.

The Duratrax shock mensioned above is what I would use there a "Losi" shock thats filled from the bottom... I've never had one leak from the factory and I'v never seen an Associated shock hold all its oil, lol... I've used the Integy shocks on my Maxx and there durability is crap but your not gonne be slamin into things at 40-50mph either, there never nice and smooth shocks,

Dynamite has a 8 shock set like the duratrax ones for about the same price... horizonhobby.com

Here is what I decided to go with HPI's 5" shocks

http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...3&I=LXHSR5&P=K

I know they are a tad longer(and they make a 4") but I figured I would have room to mount them still. Plus they offer a large selection of different springs and are adjustable

AE spring set assortment for their shocks (AE #1582), probably same inner diameter springs as on the Hot Bodies shocks:

I'm running Integy MSR5 piggy back shocks. The stock spring rate is a bit too stiff, but other than that they have been perfect for me. Expensive though.

Sorry to jump in, crash, but question. How do you guys determine your needs when it comes to compressed and extended length? My guess is that you would articulate your rig...without shocks...and take measurements? Is this correct?

Sounds like you've chosen your shocks, but a consideration might be parts availability. For example, I can find Associated and Traxxas stuff at my LHS...though Losi is a bit harder to find...meaning a longer drive for me. Just a thought.

buy them and just make them work, you can adjust based on your mounts

Pretty much what brian said. from what I have found from reading a 4" or 5" shock is your best bet and from any typical chassis it is not hard to mount them. now if you were talking about something like a 7" shock------I don't think that will cut the cheese.....
