Default My comp rig v2.2 (bad pics added)

Well, I came up with an idea and wanted to try it out, and so far it's sweet! I don't know if this has been done before, but I did it.

TLT axles, pede tranny, 55t lathe, MSR4 shocks (Losi 1.8 front, Losi 2.0 rear) Nylint 650maH pack (6AA's) tube chassis.

What's new about that? The layout. I mounted the motor, servo, and battery on the front axle. There is an intermediate shaft going from the output of the motor to the pinion gear on the pede tranny. The intermediate shaft counter-rotates in relation to the front and rear driveshafts; virtually eliminating torque twist. Here is a front view of the front axle.

Below is a birds eye view pic. I know the pics are crappy. If I can get RCDriver to come over and do a photo shoot, I'll get better ones!

Here is a side shot of the intermediate shaft connecting the "pede t-case". I took a cheap open end bell motor and completely gutted it so that there is only the shaft, case, and bearings inside. I then put the can in the chop saw and shortened it by half. I think I'll shorten it by half again for less weight and better shaft angles. I know these pics suck. Sorry.

I this pic you can see the pinion I ground down to use as a driveshaft adapter. It's a little out of round so the shaft wiggles a bit, but someone with a lathe could make these easy.

Here are a couple other shots to hopefully clear the mud.

For a poorly designed tube chassis, the COG is incredible! When the Jugg axles show up, I will be adapting this set up on to the Jugg axles. At that time I will build a new chassis and it will be crawler v3.0. On the new chassis, all of the electronics will be mounted on the front end of the tube chassis, so the only weight above the top of the tire will be a receiver, a bit of tube, and part of the tranny. The only weight to the tranny is the plastic itself and 25% of the motor can. With this inferior chassis design, and electronics ill-located, this set up is still yielding between 80-85 degrees of inclination before it back flips. With the new chassis and a Lipo pack, I'm thinking closer to 87 degrees.

I just wanted to bring this idea forward and get people's gears turning. I think when v3.0 is finished with the suspension dialed in properly, this will give 2.2 clods a serious run for their money. I don't see why this wouldn't for on the big trucks either.

The problem is I don't have a camera. I have a camera phone, but that sucks as we all know. I could take some, but they'd suck. I can do that tonight I suppose.

I don't want to give the impression that this is the kind of work I do. Right now it ghetto as fawk with a hacked up tube chassis. I threw it together just to see if the idea would even work or not. Well it does, and I think it's formally assembled with the suspension dialed in, and everything mounted and wired nice; I think it will be amazing.

Ok. I did it. I took some pics of this pile. I also seen it run. Now I'm a clod guy till the end, but I do have to say this thing does have ZERO torque twist. seriously, it has none!!!! It still wont touch my 2.2 clod, but its a start. Here are some pics. Oh, and these pics were also taken with my camera phone. So, sorry if they suck!

Almost 300 views and not one person has anything to say about this idea? I'm interested in opinions/ feedback. What gives?

ok, I'll bite, how does it work? the pics are alittle blurry. I see the motor on the axles, 2 drivelines, a center carrier and some more out back? what is your final drive ratio? is there a trans of any kind or just a carrier? does it crawl or just look good on the bench? if it does work, than props to you for doing something totally out of the box, but if it doesn't, man what a huge waste of time.

sorry bout the pics, they are thye best my phone can take. As for its crawling capabilaties, Its actually pretty slick. It crawls great and has pretty much zero torque twist.

The only bug at this point is the pinion adapters are not truly round; which allows the intermediate driveshaft to wobble a bit. It does not affect performance, it just bugs me knowing it could be better. The final drive ratio is 19.72. This set up is the exact same thing as having the motor bolted to the pede tranny. The only difference right now is the motor is relocated to the tranny and uses an intermediate shaft to connect to the tranny. The weight of the pede tranny without a motor is squat. I'll go out on a limb and say that about 45% of the total vehicle weight is the front axle. I'll have to crawl this design next to a SW2 for comparison, but this thing is a incredible improvement over my old chassis design. Over engineered? yes. Out of the box? You bet your butt. Is my goal to revolutionize shafty's to dominate over clods? Yep. I'm still working. I got new parts coming in the mail that should make this thing even better than it is now.
