The CF tube has shipped. If anyone wants a Nanotube or some CF, let me know. I'll have leftovers.

Yeah, it was shipped all right About 10:30 this morning the mailman's knocking on my door with a package from carbonfibertubeshop.com. That was pretty fawkin' quick. So after a couple of false starts, I ended up with this:

One tube I bored the holes off-center, so it ended up as a torsional-stiffness test (it's very stiff, but when it fails, it fails all the way) and one tube got crushed by the tranny-attachment screws. The final version has a short length of steel brake line in there as support to prevent that from happening again.

The trans is hung on two sections of 4-40 allthread. Two more sections support the shocks and upper links. The rear body posts come off the rear upper link mounts, and the front post is on the axle. It takes about 40 seconds to remove the chassis from the rest of the rig.

There has to be a solid way to mount it without making a huge contraption. It looks like it will crawl well, but again I would worry about any falls. If you ran a tube from shock to shock it would help. Like a triple tube design.

I think what I'll do is just make another one and throw it in the toolbox If it breaks, I've got a spare chassis I can swap on in two minutes flat. But as stiff as it is, I don't think it'll be a problem. Unless I drop it off Stu's Cliff again

Wait a minute...you're saying you want to get your hands on my long, hard tube?

I should have enough CF left over to crank out a couple more

I think they Jato/Revo shocks, 3 inches long. Goat turned me on to them last week.

I like the revo shocks too. They are soo smooth and stout. I tend to use them for rears, and use something longer for fronts to get a bit of droop.

And why is there vaseline in the background? The chassis aint THAT pretty

Sorry, no tranny-only shots, but I'll try to remember to take some next time I tear it down.

Interesting thing: I added some braces between the upper and lower link mounts to help preserve the chassis. I'm not sure I like it, there's a lot less articulation now, due to the extra rigidity of the chassis. Now when the shocks reach the end of their travel, the transmission wants to yaw on its center axis as the lower links pull it side to side. If it keeps going like that it'll pull itself apart at the tranny bolt holes.

I think the braces are coming back off. If it's going to fail, let it fail with full range of travel. I'll make another one for the toolbox.

The results are in. Main chassis weighs 10 grams A little lighter than even I expected. I didn't bring the whole truck to weigh because I'm hoping to have a rather large box to carry home tonight

I think this could be done up in steel without a huge weight penalty, and with greater overall strength. But the CF is just so trick, I had to do it.

At this point I could probably get by without the weights, but they're already in there I'll see what I have that's unweighted/unglued.

A little testing, and the Nanotube is holding up. Two packs through it, with plenty of tires getting wedged and general bad driving, showed no adverse effects. I think it's tough enough for general crawler and comp duty, but I wouldn't go dropping it off any 15-foot cliffs and expect it to survive.

This is the Lotus Elite of crawlers. Lightweight, nimble, but not real burly.
