Default rebuild time for Mugsy

He's the small one on the left

Well this has been a longtime over due. I've decided to give the ol gangster a make over. First step was to dismantel him.

here you can all the rock rash from many comps and countless attempts at that climb.

here you can see how the thin 22g sheetmetal didn't offer enough strength for link mounting

Next step will be to media blast him, remove the thin bent mounts make some repairs, then maybe get a nice PC job and
re-assemble.

basically, I got the chassis media blasted today. missed few spots but nothing major. I'll try to cut the bent steel out today. I'm thinking about taking the lower mounts off completely and remaking them in heavy guage steel with some small gusset bends.

You should make a delrin skid for the bottom and notch the center out for links

Notice the nicely painted recessed belly in the picture above. It gets a HDPE skid double sided taped in to smooth it out.

Last night I headed over to Chino63's shop to cut off the old link mounts and fab up some new ones. Originally I used some brakeline bent into a U and plated it with 22g steel. Well a few drops and hard rolls bent that 22g up pretty good. I also had to space the lower links up to clear the tubing. It wasn't the best design. So I changed it to some much stronger 16g steel bent up some gussets to give it some strength and welded them on. It came out sick. Then I rushed home to give it a coat of primer & paint. I'll have to post pics later. For some reason the computer isn't recognizing the camera. Stay tuned.....

EDIT:
Here's the pic of the new link mount

Here's the new paint job

well I spent too much time re-assembling the freshly painted buggy. I also pulled the built axles off my K2-5 comp rig and installed them on Mugsy to help out in the durability department and since they house the CVD's help in turning and a bit of extra width. anyway here's a few fresh pics

This is how I originally wanted it to look. More of a stealthly, blacked out look. I'll probably steal the Rooster Crawler out of the K2-5 and stuff it in the cockpit somewhere to complete the rebuild.

How do you guys like the new look?

Thanks, the only one that is showing it's age is the roof. The next buggy will have a narrower roof than the rub rail. I think I may need to send my servo to Hitec, it's getting a little play in the output shaft. I'll have to take it apart and check it out. I've got some of the output shaft bearings if that's the issue. We'll see. U may take it for a spin tomorrow.

Last night I started thinking about how I could add a dig unit on this thing. I started looking at how the tranny mount is welded in place, not really going to change that I guess. Then I thought about ow I welded in some dog bone cups to stampede yoke adapters, can't change that. Which isn't so hot because I made the rear one longer than the front to run the same length driveshafts on both ends, which happen to be un-modded pede shafts. Then I remembered seeing Chino's driveshaft dig and started searching. I found a few different styles. And since I don't have any Bruiser trannies lying around to pillage parts from I couldn't really use his for any reference. But I did find a few others. So I combined them to one I hope I'll like. So far I've got the driveshaft done. All thats left is to get a small dig servo, make a mount, shift fork & linkage. But the shaft IS done.

Here's a blurry pic, but then I need to sleep it's almost 2am for the 3rd night in a row.

Nope, been spending time on my new AX10 TVP comp chassis called the Mustang.

I just need to mount the servo somewhere, which is one issue since there's no room. Then make the locking ring fixed to the axle.

Dig servo mounted on the rear axle still works good for me

This tuber has always been one of the coolest glad to see a rebuild

Thanks for the compliment, got a pic of your set up?

Took Mugsy out on saturday and he still runs all the lines the TVP rigs do. It's still a very comp worthy chassis.

Nice set up, I like it. Does the dig servo take a beating when rolled? My steering servo was getting hammered before I made the lil roll cage for it.
Classic Masher 2k's nice!

It seems to be just small enough to avoid takeing a beating. The little plastic servo arm has been brokein once but thats it
