Default Axle shimming?

I've been doing some searching and was wondering if anybody has done a write up on how to shim the axles to keep the R&P from becoming glitter.

I haven't seen a write up on it. What are you wanting to know in particular?

Well I've been told a couple difrent ways to do it but one is confusing and the other is a shim between the pinion and bearing. So what's the right method and best? just thought it would be good for the newbs too so they don't get pushed away when they go out and destroy a diff the first time out.

You don't shim the pinion, you shim the ring gear. You push it sideways toward the pinion. You just need the right shim. I don't know which one it is, as I have never shimmed mine. On the other hand, I have only stripped 1 r/p in 8months of crawling, and it was over 2 yrs old.

Yea I don't understand that method I have the quick change axle method and dont see how the shim would stay if you pull the axle.

I read a little CA does the trick. Why do you have the quickchange axle mod? Do you like to break axles?

TLT R&P Shimming

Ring Gear
I use 4 shims, 2 on each side of the Ring Gear with no inner axle e-clips.
The bearings on each side of the ring gear hold the shims in place when changing a broken axle.

Pinion Gear
I use 1 shim behind e-clip

For shims I use Traxxas Fiber Washers 5x8mm part #1985.

I built the axles and the first time out I snapped a rear in less than a hour, so I told myself when I replace it it's getting the inner clip removed cause I could have been up and running again with my spares. Oh well hopefuly them CVD's come out soon.

1 shim behind the E-clip? wouldn't that bring the pinion out away from the ring gear?

Takes out the play and lines up better pulled out.

Thanks for the info, I'll have to give it a try. can you feel the difrence without running it, by just turning it with your fingers?

on my junk i did it like you would do a big rig,put a shim behind the pinion gear pushing it further into the ring gear.Ive stripped two ring gears in the back but now after this mod i havnt stripped one since. The first shim i did was to big and it was clear deff. felt binding made some noise also ,used smaller shim and it was just right.

Wow, too much work for the same result.
Just put 1 shim behind the pinion. This pushes the pinion out to the ring gear. Never had a problem since.

Default shims

Same here 1 shim on the pinoin so its closer to ring gear less play.

Yep Yep, thats the way ive always did mine, never any problems. Really helps lose the slop in the pinion/driveshaft too.

Hey i'm a nb here. What exactly does shimming do? I mean by shimming it i guess you say you save the gears? Why does it screw the gears up?

with no shims, there is not enough gear to gear contact, toooo much slop, no shims and the gears are only 1/2 engaged, add shims and it is all good in the hood, one behind the pinion and one on the back side of the diff between diff and bearing, a drop of ca holds it in place, no inner e clip for ease or replacement and off you go crawlin, best shims are traxxas .5mm teflon washers I forget the part#, I think someone posted the part# already

ok i think i get it. I think i saw it in a post somewhere on here. It moves the gears upa little so that there is more "gear to gear". It moves it up more on the pin right?

It just improves the gear mesh in general, and anytime you can get the proper mesh the gears will last longer.
