Default Project Land Cruiser (update 2005-04-24)

I have been working on a Land Cruiser TLT for the last few months on and off. Here's the latest update. I completed the coil suspension, main floor pan / firewall, one of the seats, engine bay, bumper, and a bunch of little things. Still a million things left to do on the list. Pics tell a 1000 words so here goes:

Looks Great! I like the Cruiser body with the top and doors off. ;)

Looks real good there. So the motor is going to ride passenger seat I take it? Did you get your steering resolved?

nice job as always.

kept getting emails you updated this at rcmt. but like many others have a hard time staying logged in or logging in at.

how much more are you going to do to this project?

and that one-off tlt spool i bought from you has a new home in a freshly stretched tlt ;)

The motor is going to go thru the firewall. I just have to finnish the mounts for the tranny. But I blew my ears out last week so I have to do the quite stuff right now. So I have been working with the thinner alum right now. A second seat will be made as well as a dash (mounted to the firewall) Vinnie from OCC will be the driver when they come out this month. They are 1/10 scale action figures...

Steering should be better because I lowered the cruiser when I decided to go with the coil suspension. I won't know how much better the steering will be until I get all the elecs back in and test it again. But between lowering the suspension and maximizing shimming , it should help. I have a couple more mock ups ready for testing should it still bother me.

That cable is the 2 speed cable. I left the servo off so I can take the floor out again. It attaches where the gas tank would be and it would be a pain to remove once in. The floor will be glued to the body when I am done. The everything will attach via 6 screws.

A 6 point cruiser cage is planned for it. I picked up some material yesterday to start making it. My last attempts at a tube frames didn't turn out too well. I used brake line and brazing rod... This time I bought steel rod and silver solder. Figure even tho its heavy material, a cage to copy a cruiser cage isn't that extreme so it shouldn't be too bad.

I have plans for the rear wheelwells as well, but I wanted to double check the mockups on an aluminum floor before I start cutting. I always work from templates. Saves a lot of labour when building the final parts. I must have had 15-20 of the floor before I was happy with it. But the end result looks awsome if I do say so.

This project really had me angry when I heard that the Land Cruiser body was discontinued. Everything revolves around that body. I shouldn't be hard on it but one never knows. I am going to grab at least 2 more while I can still get them. Maybe more if I can afford to.

That's freakin' awesome! I've been thinking of cutting the top off my CJ8 body, and now, I think I will! That is, if you don't mind me "borrowing" your idea.

Another quick update. I had a suggestion to move the rear steering links to the front of the axle for a cleaner look. I immediately forgot about going to bed and got to work. Here it is, much cleaner. Now that its 4:30am... I officially quit!!!

I found time today to work on the motor mount. I think the end result was worth the effort! Theres plenty of room for a driver and passenger. The body off shot shows just how complicated its becoming... Still plenty left to do...

I am not sure if I will leave it open or not. Once the dash is in there I think it'll hide some of it. The motor can't go down any further. The only way is to mount it on the side like a standard emaxx tranny, and then you'd loose the ability to have a driver or passenger.

It is starting to get pretty heavy. I may need to get foams in the tires because they are starting to sag. And the cage isn't going to help matters at all...
