i see that the shock/link mount is on top of the balls this would be to do what ?

besides gear reduction what are portals for ?

can't you do this by regearing the pinions and spurs ? ?

I think portals are for axle/pumpkin clearance...
I know they use em on tractors...

Grob is right about the portals. And as far as the pillow balls under the link mounts I would have to guess he is just using them as spacers. Would allow more belly clearance while keeping the links flatter.

The "balls" under the bracket looks like a K2 build, the ball under one hole and a link in the other. Portals are used for further gear reduction with out causing increased stress on the drivetrain. Increased ground clearence is also a plus but I think secondary.

Default spacers

I guess the balls were easier than stacking 10 washers. I have seen these portals designed to raise the gound clearance on your truck, it looks like that is what these are being used for becaust the gap at the top of the rim is smaller than at the bottom, showing the rim is offset to the down side.

The spacer is because the link mounts just ahead of it. See the pic I took from the K2 build document. Your picture is of the front axle, mine is of the rear axle.

Portals are generally used for 2 purposes.
1) Raises the diff clearance.

2) Makes it easier on the driveshafts and axleshafts because you get more gear reduction at the wheel. If you had the same overall gear reduction without portals, the driveshafts and/or axleshafts would have to transfer more torque and be under more stress.

This is exactly how I set up my K2. The balls were used as spacers over one hole and the link is fixed to the other hole. Makes for a pretty level setup. Yes, portals = gear reduction 1st and foremost!

Portals on my G wagon, with them I was able to "raise" the axles and really help out with my driveshaft angles. Also with the little tires it close to doubled the clearance under the axles

Now what are portals used for? I must have missed the last ten posts.

I thought they were just another, more expensive thing to break when bound up.
