The Stampede transmission does several things.

First and foremost it allows the use of Traxxas Sliders. This allows you to have increased angles in the driveline. The increased angles give you the ability to raise the chassis higher and extend the wheelbase a lot longer.

Second, the belts wear out a lot if you are running any kind of power or if you turn your truck into a climber. I wore my first belt out in just over a month of hard running. With the Stampede transmission you don't have to worry about wearing belts out that often.

A third benifit is that it gives a lower transmission ratio, which is good for crawling, and can help with acceleration if you want a quick truck.

On the topic of pede trannys, what kind of dimensions do they have, I might be interest in one, but my chassis has a width of 2 inches between plates, and I'd like to keep it about that. I am tired of trying to get the belt tension right on my tranny.

One of the first things i did was put a belt tensioner on the TLT and it works great, i have no idea why tamiya didn't do this to the truck:? . I used some parts from an HPI pro 2 rear belt tensioner and i've been crawling my truck for over 3 months and the belt hasn't slipped once...ah, and you dont need a pede tranny to put the sliders in, i did it with all stock TLT parts, but its alot of dremel work 8O ...and last but not least, i'm using a traxxas 32P 72T spur (needs a little modification to fit) with a 9t pinion and a magnetic mayhem, great setup for crawling with all the torque you'll ever need

Do you have the part numbers for the belt tensioner? And is it actually a loaded tensioner, meaning it pushes on the belt, or do you have to set it in the right spot? I have an idler pulley that I use to push on the belt currently.

90t Robinson racing spur with an 12t pinion. Stock motor- Matrix 7.5R

Here's my current setup, it looks alot like yours. The only downside is its either too tight= less power, run time, hotter equipment, or too loose = slipping belt.

Thanks for the tips on the belt tensioners. I went out and picked one up today, put it in and hop to try it out this weekend (assuming my parts come in tomorow).

This should give me a lot more life out of my belts and allow me to wait on the pede transmission for a while as I finish the rest of the truck.

Well, I just toasted a belt! The belt started to slip, only I wanted to be sure it was the belt, so I drove it a little longer. When I pulled it out, the belt was frayed and the nubs were ultra tiny. I am going to try and find a replacement belt, maybe an HPI one, I don't know if there are any smaller belts out there...

You can pick up replacement parts at Tower Hobbies, just put in the part number. I broke an axle and my belt was wearing out. I was able to pick up both from there and they are in stock.

Putting on the belt tensioner has given my worn belt some new life. It didn't skip at all today, where it was skpping constantly before the tensioner.

I picked up an HPI belt, slightly smaller than the tlt in length, but I think it'll be perfect for my truck.

I tried a couple of HPI belts, they were either too short or too long

The only reason I am going to run a smaller belt, is I don't have the stock tranny. Mine's a modified one, so I wouldn't suggest anyone else necessarily do it.

tltcrawl,

Check Ebay for a Stampede transmission. There is a guy that sells them there for $21.00 + shipping including the case and gears. I ordered one from him this past weekend and it should be here this week. I don't think it includes bearings or a spur gear though.
