Tranny & Chassis cutting with more PICS UPDATED (9.28.04

Hey John, I figured I'd start a new thread instead of highjacking the servo mount thread.

So I've cut the tranny including the lowest gear case bolt. I'll cut the chassis today at lunch. A full 1 1/4" will be cut off. I'll get some pics tonight hopefully.

I'm not going to make new links so that's why the 14-14.5" wheelbase. I may go longer but we'll see. I don't want to make things too easy. It would be boring to be able to drive over everything. Ya know.

EDIT: I'ts done, the chassis is now an 1 1/4" shorter. Is it like tattoo's the first is hard then you want more. Ya Ya cut cut!!!!!

You don't need to make new links to in crease the WB to 15-15.25". I am building my friends TXT and lengthened his WB to 15.25" by just relocating his link mount points on the chassis and using his stock links.

Ohh yeah, you have to go with Maxx sliders or Rivo's when you lengthen the WB to 15-15.5".

The Maxx sliders are REAL easy to get to work.

Hello John, I need to those pics. I mocked up a 15" WB and it just doesn't look right. I think 14.5" is as long as I want to go without looking bad with both bodies. But we'll see what works when I see where you mounted your links.

I agree 15"+ WB does not look that scale with the bodies that are available, but I would rather have performance.

So I tried the JB weld tranny mount idea. Failed miserably. I used the regular stuff cause I have it and it just puddled up and then flattened out. Maybe I'll make a mold. I don't know, just thinking of how to fix it fast I want to go saturday.

Rckjeep, it looks good! The wheelbase thing is interesting. I'm at 16 inches with 7 inch tires and 4.5 inches center clearance. It makes some obstacles relatively easy, but also makes high-centering on others relatively easy. Because of the high-centering thing, I'm always thinking of/looking for lines to drive that will avoid me getting hung in the center. I could go to 5 inches (or more) center clearance, but I prefer my very low COG. And the bodies,
As for sliders, I have had some difficulty with the front slider. My tranny is rotated 90degrees from stock, so the front shaft is on a rather awkward angle. I am running a pair of female sliders with a male between them. The male would twist itself right up untill it pulled out of a female. To correct that, I ran a length of 3MM threaded rod through the male end. I have 3 packs through the truck like this, and it has held up fine.
I have a Terra Crusher body on my TXT, mounted down very low over the hacked-up frame. I had to cut holes in the hood for the cantilevers to pass thru when the suspension flexes! The body looks more scale to me than any others that I have tried, even with a 16 inch wheelbase.

Just so everyone else knows (I spoke with rckjeep on the phone).

I use JB-Quick and Olive Oil to make the mold on the skid plate cause it sets in 4-5 minutes making it a fast and easy solution to secure the bottom of the tranny.

I have used the standard JB-Weld and it did not work that well because it takes so long to set.

If you use JB-Quick you can make a mold of the bottom of the tranny in 10 minutes, and it should be cured/useable is a few hours.

Well I think I've figured out a different way to mount the tranny. I"m gonna make a tranny mount that bolts to the skidplate that supports the tranny on a rubber cushion. It's all in my head now but I'll get it set up right.[/u]

I thought you wanted to have a completly smooth bottom of the chassis? Are you going to have the mounting bolts on the side of the skid plate?

I will have a smooth bottom, I'll either countersink the screws or tack weld the mounts on.

Badger, will corn or veggie oil work, or does it need to be olive for some reason?

Rckjeep, would the JB-Weld work better if you let it set up for a half hour or so before putting it on the skid, so it's more like putty?

Well I got the tranny mount done. I mounted two pieces of 1/4 Sq. bar alum. to the skid plate perpendicular to the frame rails. They keep the tranny from moving. Then I mounted the links. using the stock lowers as uppers and vice versa I got a 16" wheelbase. But I need to shorten the lowers a 1/4" to make the geometry right. SO off to the lathe tomorrow. So I'll be at 15.25-50" then it's Revo shafts. It's alittle longer than I had originally planned but screw it.

And why not add some washers to the uppers instead of shortening the lowers?
