Not according to TXT-1 manual, but I used shims when I built my axles.

When I installed the differential with long and short shafts, I placed thin shims on opposite sides of the diff to take up any loose play. Tamiya tells you to place a washer on each end of the axle shaft, next to the c clip. I was able to move the diff side to side and wanted to eliminate that. Make sure you do not shim too tight just enough to take up the excess play.

I also used a shim on the top right angle gears to keep the gears mesh consistant. Without the shim I found that the mesh was not consistant when turning by hand. I would imagine that in time as the gears wore, this movement can lead to excessive wear. I also used red locktite to hold the gear onto the splined shaft during assembly. I made sure that the gears turned freely without binding up.
