Default My First TXT, Need Some Pointers

Hey,
This is my first RC vehicle since 15yrs ago.
I have chosen TXT, and I'm going through a hard time modding it so it can perform better.
Can anyone pls tell me the disadvantages of mounting the servo this way?
Is it ok to mount it this way without skid plates (with 8mm steering links)?
Why is it that most of the ppl here mount servos horizontally?
I'm using Airtronics VB servo.
Thanks.

It might get hit if it sticks out too far

Yup it should be fine, the only skid people usually run is for the chassis, and most bumpers are decorative

So they can be moved back out of the way of rocks

like moonbuggy said above with that position of the servo it will get smashed into the rocks which if hit hard enough will kill it.

EDIT** this is the only pic i could find, but heres how i mounted my servo,it used to hit it alot with my stock tires even in this position but now that i have LST's which are a little bit bigger tire i havnt had an issues.

I see, but when I move my servo to horizontal position, it sticks out the same distance as when I positioned them this way (vertically). Not sure if it is because of VB servo size different?

K, I shall proceed to fab my centre skid soon.

This I don't quite get it.
With my current position, it can't be moved back?
Sorry I can't get the picture right now. :-(

But thanks for the inputs. Appreciate it.

Default Servo Mount

I run my servos mounted on the side of the axle housing. They don't stick out as much as the center mount style.

Not the best pic, but you get the idea.

Hope this helps,
Joe

well, if you can't move it up and back anymore, then the orientation doesn't matter. It is a personal preferance, mine is horizontal so if I break the servo horn the screw for it is easy to get to.

Hey Joe n all,
Thanks for sharing all your nice ideas!
I'm gonna try mounting it at the side like Joe's, but vertically cuz of my shocks.
And my cut chassis prevent it from hitting the servo when shocks are compressed.
Thanks for the idea, Joe!
Time to sweat it out... again. ;)

Dspy, here is a link to an album of pics of my MTPA mounts. I like these better than anything else I have seen because they put the servos and steering links behind the axle and out of harm's way. They are also tested tough. I've broken the mounting tabs off of servo cases, but never even bent the mounts. They do put the servos in the way of EVERYTHING else though. They are from an Australian company, not sure if they are still around.
