Default How to slow it down

I have the pajero with a tekin 45turn motor. I would like it to go about half as fast as it does now. I would like a slightly faster than walking speed. Should I buy a gear reduction? Or would a higher turn motor accomplish this. I would rather just stick a motor in and not move things around for the gear reduction. Holmes hobbies has a slow motor for $6 anybody have any experience with this?
Thanks

75t-85t would slow her right down, give you brutal torque and insane runtimes. The 65t in mine runs at a fast walk. 45t is pretty fast in these, even a 55t is fast.

I'm running a RC4WD reduction and the 45-turn. Top speed is too slow for me but it has excellent low speed control, especially running my old school ESC. With the gear reduction it'll act like the ESC has a drag break which is great since the ESC in the Pajero is only running a old Super Rooster.

I'd get a reduction unit then get a motor that offers the top speed that you are after.

I agree. I run the 4:1 rc4wd gear reductiom unit and love it. Love it so much I bought another for my second cc01. one runs a 55t/16T the other a 65t/20T and they are both barely faster than a quick walking pace.

the end of this video shows full speed of the 55t/16t/4:1 truck.

I'm running a 75t in mine and it's just about right. Not too slow, not too fast.

The best part is that you don't have the free rolling effect if you don't run an ESC without a drag brake. I've tried running my CC-01 with just the 45 turn and just a 55-turn motor and both left me for wanting better low end control, plus I run an older ESC that has no drag brake and the reduction unit gives me the drag brake effect. It'll stay locked pretty good, almost better than my Mamba Max set to 100% drag brake.

Thanks guys,
I am going to try the $6 slow motor from Holmes hobbies with a fxr esc if that doesn't do what I want i may try the 4x reduction. I'm not sure how far i want to go with this project.

I saw your post about the motor and just ordered one for myself. Im not big in the gear reductors, making the room on a already crowded chassis. I like my high runtimes from high turn motors and these are 620kv per RPM putting them up near 80t motors. The 65T is OK in my one CC01 but its still a little too fast for my liking.

So thanks for the heads up on the motor and I cant wait till it gets here to test it out.

I have a question to those of you who use gear reduction from RC4WD, what kind of chasis modification is needed to fit it in ? Thank you.

when installed, the endbell of the motor sticks into the battery area. you need to remove the esc tray, remove a portion of the wall at the battery area, relocate the battery and cut a bit of the bottom of the battery area to fit the motor. it sounds like more than it really is-its pretty simple to do.

here's what one of mine looks like.

I left the battery in place but tilted it up so it sits vertically instead of flat.
its a snug fit putting the battery in this way but works fine once in.

clsoe up of the motor area. the silver part under the motor cover is the reduction unit.

close up of the underside cut. I was a little sloppy with the cutting.

Would a 2:1 Reduction unit work OK with a 55t motor? I wanna slow mine down, but 4:1 seems pretty extreme and not a whole lot of wheelspeed for the muddy spots.

hard to say. a 55t motor alone is still very fast, very fast IMO. this video is of my rover sport which has 55t and 4:1 reduction as well as a 16t pinion. the end shows full speed. no wheel speed for mud though.

I would suggest you first install a 55t and determine if thats a good speed for you or if you need it slower. if slower, but you still want wheel speed I'd opt for the 2:1.

We've got a guy in our group that runs the 2:1 reduction unit and a 35 turn. It's still pretty smooth and has the perfect amount of top speed. Perhaps the 2:1 and a 55 turn might fit the bill better. I know my 4:1 and 45 turn lack any sort of wheel speed to help "bump" the little rig over things, sure the low end control is awesome but I need something for those hill climbs with loose sand/dirt.

Received the $6 motor from holmes yesterday. Very quick shipping!
It is a tight fit, long. The speed is what I wanted but there is not enough torque. Looks like a 65t is next for me.

Crap, really? Mine is being delivered today. I was hoping this would be the motor of choice. I need the torque, my rig is heavy. I will have mine installed and tested this afternoon and hopefully it will move the pig the way I want.

Well, you were right. Thank god it only cost $9.07 shipped, its a gutless turd of a motor. Slow yes, torque, none at all. I think this motor is designed to run on higher voltage, on 7.2v it was so gutless it wouldnt even make it 1/2 way up my bank out back before it just died out and stalled. Then I dropped in a 3s lipo and it woke it right up, woke it up with 9.6v stick pack as well. So unless you plan to run a 3s lipo or a high voltage pack, I wouldnt bother with this motor.

I tried the 3s but don't want to go that route.
