Cheap Fun FJ40 WIP

Because a scale/crawler build can get so expensive I just wanted to build something "fun". Sometimes I stress out too much over my builds so I just wanted to build something and not worry about have a super brushless setup, fancy radio, or super aluminum etc. My goal was to get a new kit and build it with all new parts/scale bits under $300. At the same time use only new parts.
The whole point of this build is just to have fun and smiles.
To start I got a CC01 LandCruiser and built it totally stock with the exception of bearings and wheels/tires and some other scale bits. I'm using the stock motor, ESC, and LED unit. The radio is a plain-jane Futaba MS
I Painted the grill and the wheels gloss white. The body is painted Pactra 'Bright Red'. Cutting, painting, and applying stickers was a nightmare! You can see where I messed up...

The wheels are HPI Vintage stock car 0 offset. The wheels are High Lift, they fill in much better that the stock ones

I spliced in and mounted a on-off switch for the TLU-01 so I could turn it on and off without removing the body.

I made spare tire mount out of an old Traxxas Rustler part. I have a 3Racing winch and steel rack coming in the mail. I think Tamiya had a winch in mind when they made the new scale bumper, it's the perfect perch.

My messy work bench.

I'm only at about $260:mrgreen:
I can't wait for my winch and rack!!!

Nice looking build, you can't beat a CC-01 for a tight budget scale build with miles of smiles. My Wrangler is one of my favorite builds.

Not totally secured yet, but it's really for looks anyway.

Nothin like a simple FJ to bring a smile to your face! But for God's sake, remove the plastic tube bumper!!! Its so hideous!

LOL I never understood why everyone hates the kisser bar/bumper skid plate. It is scale and I have seen many real life 4x4's with the same type of bumper.

so I took it for a spin and I seem to be getting a lot of interference. When it gets about 15 feet away the truck wants to bolt! It zigs and zags, stops and goes, then flies off in reverse. Is this bucause I have the antenna laced through the body posts?

Yeah, that's a ton of wires...

The "without fugly push bar" pic.

So they must have run out of metal in china and now they are using paper mache to manufacture little metal hooks 'cuz the one that came w/ the winch literally crumbled to nothing when I touched it. To much lead, maybe SARS  ? Who knows? Seriously though, I love this winch.

yeh i think its because you have the antenna like that, as much as its gonna look dumb, i think your going to have to stick it out of the body, put it in the right front fender where a 1:1 antenna would be

Yes your antena is the problem. You need to put the antena in the plastic tube and have it outside the body or get a 2.4ghz set up.

tpliquid 03-05-2010 09:41 AM

white wheels go good with the body

pantablo 03-05-2010 05:58 PM

the antenna wire is too close together. before you go putting it outside try re-wrappign it so there's more space between the antenna wires when it loops on itself.

That was the problem. Once I straigtened it out it was just fine. I think this project may be doomed, unfortunatley. Another casualty of this rad economy.:-(

You can pick up a 2.4ghz radio and reciever for cheap these days. RC4WD has one for $70.00. I use the same radio and it has worked great for over a year now. "thumbsup"

You can also use Pantablo's set up or put the antena in the tube provided and lay it flat on the chassis but the best fix is a 2.4ghz radio.

Kenny G 03-07-2010 09:36 AM

Thank you for all your inuput guys "thumbsup" It will definatley help me with future builds. Unfortunatley economic prussures has deemed this FJ40 to be placed in the loving hands of another owner...in other words I need to sell it 'cuz I need the money. :-( It was a fun build.

Kenny G 03-09-2010 06:59 PM
