Do I want a CC01?
 

I currently dont (and havent) own any crawlers. Basically, I have kind of got the bug for something that looks scale, is a lot of fun on less challenging terrains, and looks pretty realistic doing it, while still having potential to improve things as I go and a strong driveline.

I have always like the tamiya CC01. Obviously you can get R/C's with much more travel and 2 solid axles for about the same price, but most of them dont look as scale, and wont be as challenged by area's that arent real hardcore. The terrain i will be running on will be dirt, hills(mostly), mud, and shallow water. Id like to have a little wheel speed, maybe 12-15mph because mud requires some wheel speed, and hill climbing does also at times. Im not into rocks a lot, so the dirt and mud will be most of my running. I have a brushless 1/8 scale 4wd Associated MGT for the real hill climbing and speed, so Im just looking for something that I can have a blast just putting around with on the hills, dirt, and mud.

Does the CC01 sound good for me? I used to follow the pajero thread on radiocontrolzone and always loved the looks of them. I really like the unimog the have also. My main plans for it would be to run some nice links on the rear, chop off the brick wall, make a skid plate, and run some nicer tires and wheels with a nice truck body of some kind.

Id LOVE to buy the unimog and build it from the ground up, but I really dont want to spend $200 on a new one if I can get a used one for less than $100 RTR, so im kind of stuck as to what I want to do here. I also didnt see any used ones on ebay though, so im not sure what to do. Any suggestions?

CC01's are a blast. I have 2 of them, I was cruising them around at our scale comp today and I was able to do all but 1 gate of our 2.2/Trail class course today. Took afew tries for the gates, rolled afew times (it was unscored, I was just playing on it to see if I could make it) If you want wheel speed and running a brushed motor dont go any lower than a 2.0 gear reduction. I have a 55T motor, 16T pinion and a 2.5 gear reduction and my rig is SLOW... but it crawls great :mrgreen:

The drivetrain I will warn you is not super strong, you have to be careful about stripping out the holes in the chassis tub which is also the gear case. You can run long bolts and nuts through them too, but things still do break on them. They are pretty reliable though.

If you get one GET A GPM STEERING KIT whether you get a new or used kit. If you can afford it universals and knuckles (the part that holds the bearings that the universals pass though) and that will help out your front end too.

But to answer your question it sounds like a CC would meet your needs just fine. They are VERY scale looking.

I love driving my CC01 around, they are pretty capable rigs if you have enough patience to tinker with them.

I agree these lil CCo1's are a blast but i would suggest that you swapp out the rear 4 link bars for some others GPM makes a nice kit. Also keep in mind that if you want scale you might wanna stay in the 9.5-10.5 WB range so that the rear wheels isnt out past the "tub".

As far as what you plan on doing the CCO1 is perfect for that in my opinion. Hell tahts all I have done with mine. Another thing you may want to keep in mind is the motor will get warmer than usual due to the location of it.

Get one man you will love it. Mine has a 20t which is a tad fast for these I think I dunno its fun as hell though.

I find a 55T or 60T motor is perfect or use the stock motor with a GRU and it will climb. I had a lot of issues with mine until I cut the front brick off and now it will go anywhere. :D

A 55 turn motor on stock gearing will let it creep pretty well and it'll still be pretty lively at WOT.

It's not a 60mph brushless Slash, but it's still quick enough to be fun. And it can most definitely be bashed. It can take punishment with the best of them.

I love my CC01. I'm a sucker for scale, even when it comes down to the suspension. The CC01's the only IFS/Solid rear chassis on the market. It's got some issues, like insanely sloppy steering, but it is a 20 year-old chassis..There are a number of aftermarket companies out there, like GPM, that are making great upgrades for these rigs, and it's going to extend their lifespan until Tamiya decides to give us a CC02.

CC01s are great. Buy one. Go do it. Now.

I built this around the CC-01. Hitting the trails tomorrow and will let you know how it performs.

Thanks for all of the info everyone! I really like the looks of the CC01. I may just end up buying a new one if I buy one so that I can build the kit from scratch. I think ill keep my eye out for a used one first though. Im still not 100% sure ill get one, but I do know I would probably enjoy it. I am selling my 1/8 nitro buggy, and a Nitro Sport roller that I have soon, and then Ill look more into it then. I kept looking at the ax10/scx10, crawler king, and the others and I just keep coming back to the CC01 because of its good performance with awesome scale looks. Ill definately start a thread if I pick one up. Thanks again everyone!

They are great but remember these are not deisgned for what most people use them for. Keeping that in mind they are great. Stick to trails and scale driving and they will last a long time. Try and do what a rock crawler can do or an SCX-10 you will break stuff and get frustrated.

They're wicked fun out of the box and a little work goes a long way.

They're awesome. I love mine. Sounds perfect for what you want to do with it too.

Also, I forgot that a while back I had a buddy's clod body here and tried it on the cc-01 chassis. fit nearly perfect. wheelbase is just barely off. easy to correct. Stang Killa SS did one on a cc-01 for his girlfriend years ago too.

I'm glad someone started a thread like this I have and scx10, an an ax10 scorpion and have been looking at one of these for a while for a 1.9 scaler the pics on here are awsome! My question and it may be dumb but do these rigs have lockers front and rear or are they open?

mine both came with an optional rear locker the front is up to you to figure out so as dumb as it sounds I was told by a friend to use silly putty and well all I can say is it works very well lol
