High Clearance CC-01 Power to the portal!

Always wanted one of these but ground clearance as well as clearance for bigger tires was always an issue for me. After reading countless threads I found the answers to almost all of my questions. Here's my answer to the ground clearance issue and for my purpose the tire issue as well.

Basically stock CC-01 chassis, necessary aluminum upgrades, RC4WD 1.9 Flashpoints, gear reduction, rear 4-link and of course portals.

Here's what I started with (two of each).



The front is basically a direct bolt in but in my case, the kingpin bosses were trimmed to fit TLT C's. It actuallly helped because I was able to reduce the dogbone's working angle which should help with breakage. You can see the stock kingpin was used on top and a sleeve from a barrel nut was used on the bottom kingpin. I do have CVD's but need to turn them down to 4mm for use in the portals as well as redrill the pin hole.





The rear was much more complex. I needed to make custom axleshafts and figure out how to capture the AX-10 portals to keep them from turning. Alot of head scratching and carefull measuring paid off. It's not pretty but after paint (and alot of dirt/mud) you won't be able to tell.



Mock upof the necessary pieces.





50mm under the front skid and 47mm under the pumpkin.





Track width is a bit wider but not too bad, this will definately help with stability too.

The rear is wider by about 3/8", acceptable by me.

I never would of thought to put portals on this rig. Which one are the blue one? I have not seen those before.

They are for the CR-01.

Is the gear ratio of the different portals the same between the green and blue ones? Judging by the case, it doesn't look like it...

I would definately be interested in a kit for my CC01!

No, if you look at the pics the blues one are off a cr01 which fits in a knuckle. If you look at the other one they are off an axial and have knuckles on them, thats why he used axial ones in the rear, because they have they are a knuckle, and he can attatch them easier.

Dang it Dean.... I knew how to do portals on the front, but the rear always had me stumped unless I swapped in a TLT axle. Seeing your thread makes me want another CC01.

I just had a friend turn down some CVD stub shafts to 4mm. Should have them in soon, just need to drill the pin hole.

hey chino why didnt you put the "sleeve" on the top of the portal up front? it would give that much more clearance.

also couldnt you just use the top half of your "lockout" for the rear and cut off the lower ear?

Already ahead of you. I had it on top of the knuckle because the dogbone was binding in the cup when turning. Now that I installed the CVD's, no more binding so I switched the kingpins, gain of 3 more millimeters.

I'm sure I can get more clearance if I grind the arms and run longer shocks but this should be more than enough.

I wanted to retain the lower ear for strength. Since I'm using a solid rear axle shaft, I didn't want it to flex and bend/break the shaft. With only the top ear supported and bolted in place, I was able to move it with my fingers pretty easily.

Instead of using the flanged sleeve and buttonhead for the kingpin I countersunk the hole slightly and used a countersunk M3 bolt for more positive retention as well as a flush bottom.

Very nice job Chino. ive heard locally of somone thinking along these lines but i think it was just an idea tossed around but never pursued. Well done. I look forward to the finnished beast
