Slipping CC01 Tundra

This is actually my third attempt at doing a build based on a CC01, but I bailed on the first two before they got going.

Picked up a Class 1 project from 'dirk379' (thanks!).
He had cut the CC chassis in half and added the back half of an Axial with leafs.
Topped off with a very detailed H3 body with full interior.

Loved the body, especially since the real H3 is IFS with rear leafs.
But the body came in over 2lbs in weight, so I was going to go with a Nikko H3 shell I had. Problem was, it was too brittle.

I have always been concerned with the plastic only gear sets and no slipper on the CC01.
So....enter a 1/16 Revo slipper assembly.........
I considered using a Slash or Slash 4x4, or other, but the spur size was too big.

The Revo allowed the motor mount to sit out back further.
I had to machine a delrin block to mimic a 540 can and hold the slipper assembly.
I had to come up with a 380 to 540 adapter and a spacer plate. Then machined the Revo motor mount a little to accept the screw spacing.
Acts as a 2.5:1 GRU also.

Brick mod

Started to machine a delrin stinger, but went with some stainless.
Cut the brick all the way back to the lower mount pan.
Cut the screw standoffs inside the lower mount pan to accept to tabs from the skid plate to sandwich in.
Two upper mounts provide support back to the cut back fender wells.

Your brick mod looks amazing. I'm still trying to find some sheet metal to use for mine, and since I have no brazing/welding equipment, I am no rush. I would like to see that Mini-Revo slipper clutch mounted up. Sounds like it will work out really nicely and allow you to use the 540 can.

I am lucky to have one of the midwests largest metal recyclers in my town. They have a smaller pubic yard with the metal semi-separated that I can pick my stainless from for a few $.
I started with a trigger Mapp torch and a partial roll of 45 solder from Ebay. Nothing perfect. Bit crooked and some puddles but functional.

The Tundra body is prob 1:16 scale. Bought it thinking of an MRC build a while back.
It had a decent drop bed and functional tailgate on it, but the WB was too short.



Cut the back off and started some crude styrene work. Nothing show stopping here.
Since the glass insert is gloss black, I'm thinking flat black for the body.

Axial rails are a must now on a cc01. They fit like a glove and makes it look more scale. Cool build by the way I think I liked my cc01 better as a hummer then the hilux. It performed better.

Roll Bar
Stainless tubing and rod.
Front attachment has stainless M4 threaded rod braised into it.
Rear has stainless barrel nut braised in.

Rear leafs are attached with two stubby screws through the axle case with ground down nuts on the back. The axle cases already had a vertical screw boss for links, I trimmed it off and glued it inline with the third hole in the leafs.

Did the Chino end mod. But the lite weight rig is not flexing the Highlift leafs well. I ground the edges flat and narrowed them up to about 3/4 the original width. I'll see if they hold up.

The weaker springs were then allowing the axle to wrap a little more than normal. Added a third center link. A V link might have confined the axle too much, raising the spring force again. The single link stops the axle wrap, but allows the same flex movement.

On my 1.9 F150 I bent xtrail rails to fit inside the CC01 chassis.

When the leafs were lined up with the chassis, the rails were a little narrower than the CC01 chassis, so I put a couple bends right at the roll bar attachment to widen them back out.

I machined a strip of delrin the shape of the inside of the rail that slides into and fills the CC01 chassis with them and gives the M3 screws a full width to clamp on.

Yeah yeah, I finished it last night. Burnt the midnight oil this week and wipped through it. Took a few pics but never stopped to post the thread.


Went with 1.9 Rock Creepers on the alum NBL wheels.
Replaced the steering links with Traxxas ends.

Added stainless 16-18 ga stainless boat sides. Could have covered the whole bottom, but left it open to look at least a little more like a truck would.

Battery box coming behind the cab. Cab has cross bar in front with locating holes for body boss', and two rare earth magnets. Body had four screw through the boat sides.

With electronics on it. Nothing fancy: Rooster crawler, 645MG for now, CC BEC, Novak Synth Rx.

The slipper sits in the stock motor location, with the Novak 55t about 5/8" higher and behind it.

In the front you can see the higher shocks mounts that tie in the front body mount with magnests and locators.
Some 16th scale buggy shocks for now.

GPM or other brand of alum steering pcs.

Since the body was molded in black, I kept the color but went flat.
Nothing fancy.
Had side mirrors, but they would snap off pretty easy. Plans to run a delrin rod side to side where they mount to reinforce the body, then attach the mirrors to the rod.

Will add a rear tube bumper sometime in the future.

Just got it out for a run on my course.
Actually pretty happy with it! Need to pick some different lines to get the low belly clearance over some stuff. But it was pretty capable.

Got the slipper set so it will even push a front up a vertical and only starts to slip when one or more tires is in a pinch.

Rear leafs found the one point where I got the skinniest with the grinder. Might need to swap leafs left to right or try some reds or delrin ones.
In the future, might consider running the leafs on top of the axle versus under them.

I had won some 90mm dual spring shocks on Ebay, but the guy ripped me off and never shipped them (in claim now). The shocks and springs I am running are a bit softer so it sits flat when on a flat.
Fine line between to soft and to firm with IFS.

Got the headlight wired and working off the BEC 6v.

Front stance with 90mm dual spring shocks. More clearance.
Fine line between having clearance with stiffer springs or not getting full compression.

From the pic, looks like I need to level the front body mount bar! LOL

87th use for TLT axle stays..............

Shooter shackle but minus the swivel.
Cool plus, the flat acts like a stop so the shackle cannot go backwards.
