Tamiya CC-01 Landfreeder Build Thread (1.55 Steelies/Mudthrashers))

Hey guys. Ended up wanting to build a kit and really liked the look of the Landfreeder. Got this kit from Tower Hobbies and thought I'd share my build for anyone who may be thinking about buying this kit. I was suprised at how scale it looks. The cheesey stock Tamiya ad pics with the giant chrome bumper and roll cage don't do the kit justice imo. I've tried to share this on my three favorite forums (ultimaterc, rctech.net, and here).

Kit and supplies needed ordered....

Love the truck, one of the nicest and sharpest builds I seen. What paint is the blue, I love it.
Also, how are you finding the stock tires, my friend wants to buy one but wants to no how the tires cope. I know they're not great but they seemed to be working for you in your vids.
Nice videography and AWESOME pictures.
Oh, can we get a link to the light kit.
Cheers

Thank you for the kind words. I really wanted to make this build really tasteful and clean to show how nice it can be done up.

I had the unimog last year and I hated the tires on that thing, they were just awful IMO. I thought I was going to experience the same thing with this freelander kit but they are working really well! I'm very surprised by them, lots more grip than I expected. Just like you said, not great, but pretty good for a harder rtr type tire.

The paint is a Pactra pearlescent blue that is kinda translucent when applied, followed by a coat of rustoleum deep blue, then an undercoat of tamiya gloss black.

Here is the light kit. So cheap it's crazy! You get six 5mm white LEDs, two 3mm orange LEDs, two 3mm red LEDs, and two 3mm blue LEDs, plus the module they all plug into that then plugs right into any standard receiver port. There is even a little button they give you that can make the LEDs flash in different patterns but I think that's more for airplanes or the drifter guys. Can't beleive I've blown so much money in the past on LEDs and kits for 3x or more the cost of this kit. I actually need to buy one or two more sets of this kit before it gets popular and they start hiking up the price. I also like that the receiver plug has a female receiver plug branched off of it so you don't loose that receiver port, it can still be used.

That looks great! I too like the color you chose and I have that same light kit. They are pretty nice for the money.

I see Tamiya changed the color of the plastic gears in the transmission. They used to be white. You will have to let us know how they hold up.

I was wondering when you'd 'chop' the block. Did the kit come with light buckets or did you make them yourself?
Also did you just cut out the light decal?
Is there an interior going to be a happening thing?

I made my own light buckets. And I did just take an exacto knife and cut out the light decals, worked pretty good! I will probably attempt to make an interior later next year when I get bored.

Probably will keep the stock ones for a while. They do surprisingly well on my trail runs.

With both diffs locked and tires on the 'hardish' side, does it 'skitter' much on high grip surfaces?
My friend is planning on ordering one this w/end and am getting ideas and questions constatly fired at me!!!!
And WOW, you're a GREAT photographer.

Thank you sir! When I drive on the sidewalk and on pavement it's pretty planted. But on slightly bumpy dirt roads it definitely is skittish compared to my old scx10

Thanks for the info, um, what'll be the next mod or are you going to leave it reasonably stock?

My last CC-01 I did all sorts of mods to and it just wasn't worth the money to me. I think for this one I want to leave it pretty much stock. I am eyeing the RC4WD 1.55 wheels and some TF2 Mud Thrasher tires as those seem to be pretty popular with the CC-01 guys. I've heard of a lot of guys talking about buying TF2 take offs but I'm not sure how much they are paying or where they are getting them from.
