Portal Need !!!

I know this has been done before, (Power to the portal) but it wasnt ever clear how to do the rear end.
Anyway got my order in 4-5 days back and since then I have been searching the net and scratching my head how to do.
Made some progress, if it works out then ok, if it doesnt then new order and new idea has to come up, so please bear with me and any info on this will be welcome.
Forgot to say every thing on the axle is stock, havnt changed any shafts.

On to the progress !

Front was really easy

Re: Portal Need !!!

Small update.
Did the other side of the axle, just need to cut the shaft, had to get a new dremmel, yesterday and today got off work a little late.
Managed also to roughly cut the body and check how it will look.
This thing is a beast!!
Had it next to my cj 2.2 and the clearance of the cc01 is more!!!!
Will post a photo tommorow.

Very cool, I like your solution! "thumbsup"

I think for Chino's axles he modified TLT shafts. The short side was cut, lathed down to 4mm and a new pin hole drilled, the long slide he sleeved and brazed to lengthen and then lathed down and a new pin hole drilled. He always makes stuff look a lot easier than it is. :ror:

Great progress so far! Portals on these are awesome.

Yep, that's pretty much how I did it. Custom shaft on the long side welded together and cut down on the short side. Let me know if you need any info."thumbsup"

Re: Portal Need !!!

Btw, get some spacers for between your top plate and the axle ears or things will work loose and cause problems.

Thank you sir, and I have 1 question, the pin on the end of the shaft how did u hold it in place , did u weld it? or are the tlt shafts different, do they have a T at the end of the shaft?

You've made it this far, I'm sure you'll figure it out.

Like highmark said, I made longer shafts that went through the portals and we're turned down to 4mm. The pin is held in place by the top portal gear.

Re: Portal Need !!!

Well , just finished the rear axle, but I need to tear it down again, can not believe I assebled it the wrong way around  front wheels turning fwd and rear ones backwards, will do in the morning it is already 03:00.
Also have some binding, the teflon bearings are getting squashed, so I ordered the bearing kit. Will take photos of everything as soon as I tear it down.
All parts used were stock, tools used only a dremmel, and got a brass pipe to sleeve the portal drive with the pin slot, in order the pin not to fall out.

Re: Portal Need !!!

Anyway, got up early morning, had a nightmare that someone got in the house and stole the portals!! Went down and the cc01 was missing !!!
Went outside and found my son sitting on the balcony, he looks at me and says: dady you did a good job, Jeep looks nice :ror:
Made a cup of cofee and got to work before the rest of the family got up, promissed to take them to the beach.

So here goes, portals have finished , no binding after a few adjustments.
Im thinking of lengthening the body mabe a 10-15mm, will see still havent decided .

This is the bronze sleeve I fitted on the portal drive so the pin wont fall out

Other side

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-Y...0/IMG_2325.JPG

Fitted correctly this time

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-K...0/IMG_2328.JPG

The custom cj is on 2.2 wheels seethe clearance difference, this cc01 is going to be a beast!!! still cant believe it.

If something isnt clear in the build, please ask and I will clarify it.
Forgot to mention gave a very slight camber on the rear portals.
Also ordered tires, and dampers.
Will see if I can use some links I have from a forgotten project I found in the garage.

Yeah buddy, nice work! I had mine at a 12" wb, it was amazing how well it worked. I found no real need for bigger tires than the original smaller Proline TSL SX.

This is still on my "To build list" cool build.
If you ever decide to sell I'm first in line.

Thank you, tires I have ordered are 108 mm, have a set on one of my other trucks so I tried them out and they seem ok.

Re: Portal Need !!!

Decided to go with a front axle conversion, got some parts in today, still a few missing but will be here soon. Being a Jeep never was happy with it not having a front axle, Also with this conversion I think I will be able to use the XR portals, same as the rear ones.
My bearings also came in, did the rear axle, sorry no photos!
Parts needed for the front
cc01 axle shafts and casing
tlt diff complete
axial scx front hubs (not sure if they will work, will try them out)
and the portals for the XR
Wish me luck!
