| Schlabinski's CC-01 FJ Cruiser
I originally put this together about 2 years ago, but now that we have this nifty XC/CC-01 forum here I thought I would share. My home brew ball bearing steering upgrade... I used stock front end hackings to create a new front skid that improves approach angle and looks factory-ish: Ultra smooth Tamiya aluminum 3 inch shocks with RPM spring retainers and Traxxas ball ends: I replaced the stock ball ends in the steering links and upper suspension links with Traxxas ball ends to reduce play: To obtain the perfect wheelbase for the FJ Cruiser body and reduce play in the suspension, I replaced the stock 4 link: Traxxas Jato driveshaft: My first attempt at wiring LEDs from scratch. The power is provided by the 6 cell stick pack that powers the truck: A few pics of it all together: Driving it in the basement in the dark is fun! Thanks for looking, Jeff |

| Thank you both! The shocks are Tamiya DF-02 front shocks, part number 53701. You have to buy two sets in order to get 4 of the 3 inchers.

Even before my first real outing with this rig (pictures above), I wanted to install a gear reduction without having to modify the stock battery location. Credit to JasonInAugusta for posting the picture of his CC-01 chassis with a GD-600 and Revolver2 motor which provided the solution that I was looking for, and many thanks to Holmes Hobbies for patiently answering all of my questions and steering me in the right direction for the ESC and motor. I ended up with the Scorpion 2215 outrunner, a Quark 33a Procar ESC, and Castle Creations BEC. Here is how it all went together... Removed some material from the transmission cover/motor plate holder to make room for the GD-600: GD-600 attached to the motor plate (in the 20T position). Notice the material at the bottom of the GD-600 that will need to be removed otherwise it pushes up on the transmission cover and upsets the gear mesh with the spur: The shaved GD-600: Installed with only minor trimming to the electronics plate: I decided to use the 20T metric 48p pinion on the GD-600 so that it would swing towards the steering servo instead of the other way: Everything is wired up and ready to go: Thanks for looking, Jeff |

After quite a bit of convincing from some local ORCRC friends, I decided to run the FJ Cruiser in the 1.9 scale class at MSD Scale Nats 2009. I picked up some new tires and wheels, some progressive springs for the rear, and waterproofed the electronics. Here it is ready to go... Some pictures from course #2 (thanks to War Pig for taking them)... This thing surprised me in Montana. I'm pretty sure I was the only one running a CC-01 in the 1.9 class. A disadvantage in a lot of situations, but in some it excelled. I quickly realized that I need a winch and tow points for the front and rear. I also wouldn't mind a little more wheel speed, so I will probably move to 3s LiPo. Most importantly, it was a blast...especially the course that these pictures are from. Jeff... as always your rigs are almost too nice to even run. Very clean work. Still amazes me that you've had this rig for almost 2 years and Montana is probably the first comp with it. Great job. We need to get you out to the scale comps local so you can hang out with the other CC-01 rigs. |

Jeff I loved watching this rig wheel out in Montana. Glad we got to run course 4 together so I could see just how capable this rig is. Now I'm thinking about building a rig like this. Great build thread, tech, and pics.

Hey Andrew! Course 4 was great...I really appreciate your winching help. Adding a winch is on my list of things to do to the truck since Montana. It was great to meet you and I'm glad you could make it from California. You should get a CC-01...you'll love it! | |

Time for a little update. After competing with this in Montana in 2009, it really needed even more steering and a winch. I removed some material from the c-hub to get the knuckles to turn a little bit farther, and added MIP CVDs. Scrounged up some old TA-02 MIP CVDs (thanks to the Utah guys for the part number guidance)... Compared to stock... Installed... For the winch, I modified a Hitec 645MG for continuous rotation and mounted it on the chassis where the throttle servo would normally go... Thanks for looking, Jeff |
