Default CC01 Lada Niva RB1000MK

Hopefully I'll keep this thread up.

The plan: To build a CC01 based Lada Niva for some overseas trailing.
The location: Ukraine Exclusion Zone of Chernobyl and Pripyat.
Scale: as far as I can, I'd like the Niva to look scale but it won't be obsessively so.

Starting with the Defender set. The box of bits I'm not going to be using seems way more full than the box with the bits I am.

These are the bits I've collected so far:-

Thoughts so far:
The scale dampers look cool but I suspect won't be much cop once fitted. Feel too firm. Will get softer internals.
The GMade 75mm should perform better but won't look too scale.

The 1.55 wheels and MT tyres might look a bit too small once the shell is on. Can't check as shell is on way back from paint shop.

I've had a go at painting the chassis. Recently bought an airbrush so decided to try it out on the CC01. For reference I'm as artistic as a breeze block so don't expect uber details

I have a few questions:-

Is there any downsides to me upgrading the internal gears for the GPM metal items? Is it worth it?
Is the alloy rear axle worth buying?
Is there anything missing from the pic of option parts that are a "must have" ? Junfac propshaft is on my list.
I need the CC01 to be as reliable as possible. Weight is going to be an issue for the plane and I can't take loads of spares with me. I'll be carrying in backpack for at least 2 days. I know, ask about metal parts then complain it's too heavy!

While I'm here. Drone and pics from some of my visits to The Zone: -

The axle hears will hold up to years of abuse, ask OSRC. As far as the other gears i think the only other issue is that you may have to drill out the screw holes the top cover for the transmission. The spur gear seems to be the weakest link, also upgrade the pinion to steel, and throw the aluminum one in the trash. Traxxas maxx shafts are light and if you drill out the shafts can fit. Cheap to replace.

I never had any problem with the ABS axle housing, they'll hold for ages.
About the GPM spur gear set, I never get in touch with one, but I never heard anything good about it from my friend. If you are saying the steel differential gear from GPM, I shall recommend the same product from King-Kong RC, much cheaper, and also much durable than the stock gear.

Talking about the pinion gear of CC01, I do have problem with the stock aluminium pinion---they just wear out too quickly:

Here's my used stock pinion on the right, and a new MST M06 pinion on the left. I believe a weared pinion is responsible for the sudden death of a stock nylon spur.
What really confused me is that the same pinion will last much much longger on TAMIYA WR02...

Shell is back from the painters. Very happy with the finish. The shell itself is quite poorly produced which suits the car perfectly. I have a Lada 2107 shell which is similarly finished (The first plan was a Gymkhana video around Pripyat with the Lada)

Points for anyone that gets the number plate reference

Oh, another quick questions - ESC? Hobbying 1060 or 1080? The Holmes Hobbies motor is a 30T. Anyone know if either can be used with the HobbyWing wifi module? (I use XR10s in my racers)

I never did keep this blog up to date. However, I did take this guy to Chernobyl back in October and he'll be coming with me again next year.
