Default Question on the spool shims......

If the center spool was shimmed to tight would that not cause quite a bit of drag on the drive train. I ask this because i have run 5 packs through the rig & then took the axles apart to lube them, boy that fish jelly is messy, while i had them apart i took a quick measurement and with the two shims the spool is on the tight side & with only one shim there is a little movement side to side, but very little. Couls this be the heating & drag problem? After the lube job & went out & ran on a high grip surface & after 25 mins the steering servo was hotter that the motor & there was a little heat at the driveshaft, warm but not hot & the battery took only 523 ma to recharge. I am running a 35T Intergy motor, Sidewinder, 1350 Losi Lipo, Comp Claws, Vanquish Revolvers 2 slugs in front, none in rear. BTY i have over 8 packs on this rig.
Maybe some thoughts on this & opinion's?

Worm gears may be different but we always shimmed our 1/8 scales to where there was still a small amount of movement. I do not have a losi or have I seen one but I would think that it would be better to have a little slack especially since the gear uses the center of the main gear.....if thats correct.

Yes it does run in the center, kinda. If you look at the wear pattern on the center gear, looking at the center gear, the wear is on the front of the gear on the left side & on the rear of the gear on the right side. But no wear on the center of the gear.

Hi Speedracer,

Thanks for the clarification. On checking the manual again to see what you are referring to I see that there should only be ONE shim per side on the Worm Spool gear anyways.
I wonder if this is the problem for everyone, two shims per side instead of one?

Good spotting.

Here's the page from the manual - I've indicated the shims in question.
Click the image to open in full size.

Guys, if you have heating issues you should check your axles to make sure they only have the 1 shim per side for a total of 4 shims.

Let us know what you find.

Cheers,
Mike.

This is what i'm talking about, Thanks Mike for the scan. On my rig i have/had 2 shims per bearing per side.

Is that 2 shims per bearing? For a total of 4 per spool?

It say's x2 because it's 1 per side.

Look at the worm, x6, 3 per side.

Its telling you there is 2 shims with that part# one for each side. Notice the screws it shows X4 meaning there is 4 total screws of that part# So there is a total of 2 shims with that part# that should be used, one on each side

Very interesting... I wonder if this is the fix for the brushed motor setups? (in other words, can I remove those shims and run my FX-R with a 35-55t brushed motor?)
Removing 2 shims vs buying new brushless system.... hmmm

I have kit #366 it also has 2 shims per side. Noticed that in the instructions as well when I tore it down to grease and drill spin the axels.

My axels were well greased from the factory. rear axel was smooth, but front is not. Front is stiff and you can feel the gears click when you turn it by hand.

Anybody Q rich on the extra shims?

So far that's 3 with 2 shims each side.

Be interesting to get more of you guys checking out your axles and letting us know the results.

Could definately be the cause of the binding and heat issues in the axles and may also help with the motor heat problems.

Hi Speedracer,

No worries on the picture.

Did you have 2 shims per side in both the front and rear axles?

Cheers,
Mike.

Mine also had 2 per side (4 total) and very little grease. I removed 1 per side from each axle and packed in a lot of grease. I think my number is 946.
