Pull the spur gear out and check the slipper pads for grease or residue. Then make sure the cone washer is facing in toward the spur gear. Also it would not hurt to pull the axles apart a check the shims. There should only be one shim on each side of the spool, they have been shipping them with 2 which is too much and causes excess heat and drag. The shims themselves are really thin so take them out and pull them apart, it is hard to tell there is 2 so look closely.

You maybe able to pin the hubs & gear together by drilling a hole through the front hub, gear, rear hub & put a roll pin in & that would lock it, but may put a strain on something else.

I was going to do that but found that the cone washer was bottoming out on the shaft, put a spacer between the cone washer a the outside persure plate. No slipping now.

I removed 1 shim on each side of the spool and it helped but didn't eliminate it completely.

Don't mean to sound like a newb here...but what does it sound like? I've not heard what I would call a traditional slipper sound coming from my Losi. In fact when it gets bound I feel like the motor cogs and stalls out with a brushless motor. What I am hearing is what I think is a slip in the drive cogs. Those cogs are under spring tension and I hear a tension "click" when under load now. This will happen in front dig, rear dig or 4wd. I've taken the tranny apart twice now nothing looks out of order. Have not thought to look at the slipper since the nut is on tight.

Try adding a small shim or washer between the aluminum spacer and where it touches the slipper plate. The tolerances are very tight there and if they missed it (which we have seen with the CV's) you could be bottoming out on the actual slipper shaft end and not the plate. I've seen this in a couple so far. As for why we added a slipper, it's supposed to be help protect the tranny, but it should not even be noticed when functioning correct. Thanks, Rich

Well after looking the slipper over and trying some of your ideas as to how to make this work short of just giving up i have since drilled the spacer out so it now slides all the way onto the shaft and used 2 washers from the pack of extras. After looking at my slipper i found that it was bottomed out without putting any tension on the slipper. this seems to have helped quite a bit will get some more testing as soon as the rain stops this has been very frustrating for me.

Sorry if I sound like an idiot but how do you tighten it. I took the gear cover off and tried to hold the gears with my fingers but that worked real well. All it did was spin inside my fingers. Do I need to pull it apart to tighten it? Thanks guys

The slipper nut is exposed - you can get a wrench on it + tighten in the truck-

easiest way i found is put an .050 wrench in the setscrew the slipper nut is on, turn the wrench counter clockwise while holding the nut with some pliers to tighten it. vice versa to loosen. Ive since redid mine with a long set screw that you find in a Losi buggy slipper, a slipper spring from a 4th generation Associated T4 and a plastic washer. (btw youll need to heat the existing set screw to remove it, they used the Good Loctite on there lol) Adjusted it to where it started slipping when i hold a foot against, clears the battery tray perfectly and hasnt caused any problems yet. Ill post pics tonight when I start my build thread. | |
