Talking DTP's Comp Crawler

Like the rest of you, I was excited when I got the call from the LSH to come pick it up. Felt like a kid at christmas tearing into the box. All my elation turned to sadness when we seen one of the rear tires free spinning. Worm gears, right? Not supposed to spin from the wheel, right? Well upon further inspection, we found that a bearing was missing inside the rear straight adapter allowing the whole wheel/axle assembly to slide out & dis-engauge fron the spool. Found a 5x10 brearing at the LHS & threw it back together & all was fine again. What a relief.

I read that alot were having heat issues in the axles & were breaking them in & repacking the grease. As soon as I heard, I ordered some gearjelly from RS. I tore the axles open & I found mine also had 2 shims per side. Removed the extras & cleaned off the stock grease. Repacked with GJ & reassembled. Seemed like alot more resistance than before.......time for break-in.

Instead of using the drill method, I did something else. With the motor installed, I hooked it up to my ice charger set to motor break-in. Ran it for 5 minuts & only slight amount of heat. Repeat in reverse for 5 minutes again & still only slight amount of heat. I did 5 more 10 minute cycles at varying voltages. I shoud note that in the begining, the amp draw was kinda high 7-8a during the first 4-6 minutes then dropping down a little. On the last cycle I ran it at 8v & start up amperage was lower than 7a & settled to about 4-5a for the remainder. What I got out of that, was that it was freeing up & required less power to start turning.

Now on to the electronics, I originally planned to use a Ready stockstar 27t set to ~7* timing w/13t pinion.

This is what I used during break-in. Well, after getting everything in & initial couch testing, it was apparent that the stalling was going to be an issue I didn't want. So out it came & in went a HH cobalt puller 5t with 15t pinion.

As for the rest of the electronics,

FXR pro
CC BEC
HT 5955tg steering servo
Losi MRC servofor dig
HH cobalt 5t puller
HH 1300 3s Lipo
DX3R

This has to be one of the cleanest wiring job I have ever done. Thanks to these nifty little wire holders.

Going to go out & test the box setup today. I'm sure the motor will resolve the stalling issue.

Looks pretty sweet,I'm anxious to try and drive one.

If you still find heat in the pigs and feel there's a need to "break them in" more....try this. I wanted to break my worm gears in on my RF. I assembled the axle with no grease. Chucked the pinion up in my drill press set to over 3000 rpm's. Let her sit there and run for a touch over an hour. There was a good deal of heat. I then put some white lithium grease in the diffs and run them for a bit. Very acceptable heat levels IMO.

They seem fine now. I'll run them today & try to get temps.

You will need to outboard your uppers & move the RX tray back one hole.

Definitely needs some Gekkekan and Kikkoman stickers! haha!

Looks awesome! You're gonna really like it. I liked the box stock outfit but I did move the shock arms to the lower position. helped on our steep climbs. I'm running 3s with a tekin rs and 17.5 15t pinion. It's a beast.

Haha...kikkoman, that too JDM. I like Aloha brand.

I'm thinking about the Tekin RS too, not settled on a 17.5 or 21.5. Seems some have had stalling issues with those too. Did you have any?

Nice looking rig DTP, about the motor selection, i have heard good reviews on Novak's goat systems on this particular model, although you can only use 2 cell lipos.

That's the only hold up for me, since the berg, I love 3s lipo.

Seems like it's just too new still to have the right motor for this. More testing & feedback is needed. I still see some reports that contridict themselves.

I'm playing around with the RS/17.5 combo 14T and 3S 1300.

It has very good wheelspeed faster than my Aial with FXR/55T and 3S.

Clmbs walls without breating hard. No cogging.

I curious as to how well a 5T works, versus a 7T. I am loving the 7T in mine.

I'm leaving in 5 minutes to go crawl. I'll post a report tonight or in the morning.

I am in the same boat. I tried a Novak Goat with a 21.5 motor (tried 16T and 19T pinions) and it is way too slow. I am used to a Berg with 3 cell and HH 35T's. I don't think the Losi needs that much wheelspeed, but it definately needs more than the Goat could give me. I have the Tekin RS with 21.5 motor on the way. It will arrive on Thursday and I will give it a test on Friday with 3 cell lipo.

Well after maybe 20 minutes or so of crawling. I'm guessing because there was alot of stop & go. This 5t puller is awsome. Great wheel speed & great crawlability. My friend is gonna put the 10t in his.

I think, right now, this is the absolute BEST motor for the comp crawler.

I too am used to a berg w/HHH 35t on 3s lipo. I believe this is just as fast & crawls way smoother. I have done the update to the FXR in the berg & it became smoother down low. I wonder if I did it to this FXR pro............

Thanx X. It's the best I've ever done. To further clean it up, I'd like to shorten all the RX wires.

I'm running the 7T with a 15T pinion and 3s 1500 mah lipo and it's been great so far. No cogging and good wheel speed.
