Cool Pdog7's Losi Comp MOA

Components:

Tekin FX-R
Integy 45t Motors
Eritex MOA
3 Cell 1350mAh 30C Lipo
Spektrum RX
DX3R
Castle BEC
Hitec 7955 @ 7volts
HB Rovers
Vanquish DH Wheels

I started out running a 21t titan with mixed results. I smoked my FX-R running the titan on a 15t pinion. I know some people are running the same set up with great results. Shims were removed, worms greased and, broken in on drill prior to running.

I switched to the Tekin RS 21.5t Sensored Brushless system and have had better results. Initially I ran a 16t pinion and the motor ran too hot and didn't have the wheel speed my Berg has with two 45t motors. After going down to a 14t the heat is much lower and wheel speed is now acceptable for me. Timing on the motor set to zero as well as thru the Hotwire. Drag brake set to zero, neutral width min, boost timing off.

I removed the stock battery tray and moved to the upper links and this helped some with side hilling. I out-boarded the rear shocks at the axel and spaced away from chassis and this helped loosen up the suspension. It feels more stable now. I'm liking this rig more each time I run it. Initially I hated it compared to my Berg but, it has impressed me with the lines it can crawl. As has been said before this rig loves to slow crawl and is not a basher. I'm still running the stock CVD's with no breakage. EPA's are set to 100%, I've been giving it hell with full lock digs and off camber falls with no breakage yet.

How do rovers do with all the rubbing and what not? I wanted to get some but even the stock tires rub almost to much in my opinion...

Thanks, I'm starting to think I may try a summer fun comp with it to see what it is really capable of. I love my Berg so much it's hard to wrap my head around not comping with it.

Thanks for the set up tips they have helped. I'm thinking about a little computer fan like you are using to cool down the motor but, now the temps are starting to come down.

They rub, but not that bad. I'm used to that, on my berg the Rovers have rubbed off the white paint on the springs. It doesn't seem to be a real problem with the Losi either.

Looks good pdog Does the servo get warm @ 7 volts? I'm sure it has good power though.

A little, but not too bad. It does have good power at 7v....enough to throw the rear end around when the front is in a bind.

pdog7 are you saying when you put a smaller pinion your wheel speed increased?

No, I was confused. I'm going to try a 13t tonight. I'll let you know how it does. The heat definitely went down but, I lost wheel speed , when switching from a 16t to 14t.

Angry Oh Snap

Went to the local Hobby Town at lunch for a little crawling. Bound up a wheel when digging and snap. Time to put in the replacements Rich sent me. I was wondering how long they would last. I'm really starting to like this thing.

I'm glad to hear your liking this crawler. You said this past weekend at the atl comp, you couldn't dig while in a heavy bind. How much is this true and to what extent.

Looks good. Did you run this rig this past weekend in ATL? I did not get to see you run.

Glad to hear the Tekin is working well. I have the same system in my SCX scaler.

I adjusted the dig servo epa's and went thru the transmission. The dig shift fork was binding, so I had to enlarge the hole in the tranny case and this fixed the problem. The dig works good now. Another part of the problem was the gearing I was running a 16t pinion and I think this had something to do with the stalling/binding. I'm using a 14t pinion and the heat generated by the motor and the stalling is gone.

No I ran the Berg. I'm still not totally convinced that I can count on this rig in a comp situation. I will be running it at our laid back comp this weekend at the North Shore.

Default Comp Report

Ran my first comp with the Losi this weekend. My initial impressions were correct this rig is not as capable of side hilling as a Berg but, we all knew that. That did cost me a couple of gates in the comp but, I managed to pull out a 4th place. The new redesigned cvd's held up fine despite being bound up a couple of times and other competitors commenting that a cvd was about to break.

That being said, this is a very capable rig and untouchable at the price. After comping with it I can easily say it is much more capable than the Axial out of the box. It would cost quite a bit more to have a comparable Axial rig.
The turning radius on this rig is awesome Much better than most Bergs.
I was able to turn uphill off camber much easier than my Berg with the tight turning radius and narrow axle width on the Losi. It will dig up-hill and hold the line easier than a heavier Berg. The break over height is a little less than desirable since I'm used to 3 1/4" on the Berg and only felt comfortable running 2 7/8" on the Losi. I've gotten used to the low center of gravity on the Berg and have come to rely on it in a comp and this rig wanted to roll over way too easy The suspension felt really plush once I out-boarded the shocks on the chassis and axles like DelMonte.

The worm axles really impressed me also. They have quite a bit more clearance under the differential than shafty's and Bergs. I really love the way you can jump a gap and land on the face of a rock and just stick there like a spider with no roll-back at all.

The tranny and dig on the Losi work well enough in their stock form but, the need for stronger after market parts to replace the plastic internals is definitely there. The front and rear dig did work every time I needed it. There is however a definite lag time shifting from front dig back to 4-wheel drive that can hurt in a situation where you 4-wheel reverse in a hurry to avoid falling over backwards on a climb. I think a better (faster) servo would help this, I'm using the Losi MRC servo which is cheap. I did notice some binding when I would dig it down hard since the worms won't allow the axles to relax the load once I shifted back our of dig. The fix for this is to bump the rear dig slightly to relax the load on the drive train. Edit: I just spoke with Speedracer and he is having success using stiffer springs in the dig to help pop it out of dig in a bind.

I don't think I will be replacing my Berg comp rig with the Losi just yet but,... I think this rig will be a force to be reckoned with once it gets the Eritex MOA conversion kit.

Default Finally

I got the Eritex MOA conversion last night. It took me about 30 minutes to install the kit. Everything went together really easily. The craftsmanship on these pieces is excellent. I'm still waiting for the Punk dig but, will wire-up the old dig-a-ma-jig for now. Still need to wire the whole truck tonight and do some testing. More pics and some video to come. Gonna take it to the Ocoee and do some crawling this weekend.

Original battery tray mounted on the skid. The electronics trays will not fit in the original mounting holes, they hit on the motors now. I flipped them around and mounted one hole up.

I think it will side hill better now. I nicknamed it the possum before the MOA conversion because all you had to do is look at it and it would roll over. Better now
