MOA vs Brushless Hey all, forgive my n00bness. My experience with crawlers is limited. I've ventured from a Summit, to a Micro Losi Crawler, to now a LCC. I've yet to get any electronics for it yet, but have been researching my options here on the forums. It appears that if I want to stay shaft driven I'd best go with a Novak 3s on 18.5 motor. On the other hand I can get a conversion with MOA and run two brushed motors. I sat there and compared prices and it looks like both options are around $200.00 give or take. I have a sidewinder and mamba max (first generation) that I could use for the brushed motors (I think) So, question is, for same investment which would I want to go with? What's the advantages of each option, please? Thanks! -Mike |
Well IMO the MOA would be better, because there is less parts to have to worry about. I run a shafty right now but am thinking of going MOA because of the fun and success I had with my old Clod. I also have heard that you endup getting more power to the axles with the MOA. |
Both those ESC's are great and I'm sure they are both capable of running 2 motors. I can't speak for the mamba max, but the sidewinder is capable of both brushed or brushless. So you could run a brushless shafty and then later switch to the brushed moa if you so choose to. I thought about the moa kit myself but decided to run it as a shafty through the summer. Then if I get bored next winter, might convert. I like the idea of less parts. No tranny or drivelines to worry about breaking. On the other hand, have heard of people wanting to switch back from moa to shafty. Tough call.. |
Your esc needs to have a sensor wire hook up on it to run brushless or it will cog. Both those esc's will run two brush motors with no problems. I use a sidewinder on my MOA LCC it runs my two cobalt pullers with no problems. |
I ran a mamba max for a while, it worked great with the MOA, but when i upgraded to HH 10T pullers, I also bought his ESC to go with them. That is also a great ESC, but it is brushed only. Also as stated before, if you go brishless make sure it is a sensored system or it will cog |
I thought the MOA cost more? Eritex MOA kit + BLC regear + dig switch, Im not sure how much any of that cost. vs a Goat 3s kit, $189.99 |
I am also wondering about the difference between moa and a shafty lcc |

I would stay away from the 14 mm rotor. Too much cogging. |

I have had two Goats systems and loved both of them. |
i have a lcc that is now an MOA. I use to run a goat 18.5 2s i like the MOA allot more. but what I didnt know when i did the conversion is that my 2s packs dont have the power need to run this how i would like. So now I have to save some cash to buy some 3s packs to run this thing. So before you decide with direction to go in consider what you have and what you want. MOA 45 turn's a FXR and a good 3s pack is fun"thumbsup" |
Thanks to everyone for taking the time and helping me. With the responses I've gotten and the research I've done I think I will stick with stock shafty setup at the time being. If I decide to go MOA I'll at least have a brushless setup to put into another truck (scale maybe?!?) Anyway, I'm now trying to decide between the Novak Goat3s 18.5/21.5 or the Xcelorin Rock Crawling Brushless Electronic Speed Control and 21.5T Motor. Any advice? Thank you! |
Goat 3s is my opinion. That is what i have in my LCC |
I was thinking about going MOA also but I think I have talked myself out of it for now. I think I'm going to try the Tekin 17.5 brushlees motor with a Mamba Max Pro ESC. The Goat 3s don't look bad at all for the money but the Mamba Max Pro and Tekin RS has more adjustments and features in the ESC. CKRC has the Mamba Max Pro for $110 but there out of stock. At least Give them a look.."thumbsup" |
goat 3s with 21.5 my friend on a 3 cell an hold on to your ass with horse power |
Do you get longer run times when you go to MOA? With the shafty i have to use 1 battery per course! I might make 2 but i would be afraid to risk it. |

What will the noticeable difference be between the 21.5 and 18.5? If I were to go Novak, how do I know which motors are 14mm? I don't want to cog :) Thanks for the extended help guys, really appreciate it. |
