i google a little. What are the real benefits of having worm drive over traditional gear? Worm is the deal breaker to me; can someone please school me? Besides instant drag brake. Does Losi try to save money on the ESC? Thanks

worm gears offer a much greater gear reduction in a smaller package. the drag brake is just a side effect of this type of gearing. running worm gear axles allow the transmission to have a lower numerically gear ratio which helps keep it small and also helps to reduce torque twist. the downside is that worm gears are usually only ~75% effecient which creates greater friction which means it take more motor to do the same work. because of worm gears, the losi axle has much better ground clearance than typical ring and pinion axles of the same size.

Bump. I'm looking for the hd gear sets. I have found the hd worms but no spools. I would really like the dlux worms. I don't care if there used.

Good luck finding some. They haven't been available new from Dlux in a long time. I gave up trying to find one for my rear axle a long time ago...

My brother might not have the axles anymore don't know what happened to em so I might just part it out or use the chassis for a custom build not sure but I know he doesn't want it or plan on using it

How do you reach that high efficiency?
The math I did sais the efficiency is more like 50%, provided near ideal conditions.

Low efficiency is the reason you can't run it fast for a prolonged time, and it takes relatively much power to run it fast at all.

Not to mention that the drive shaft is connected above the axle, providing even more clearance under the shaft.

Read my sig. i dont know about the losi axles in particular but most tech sheets list worm efficiency between 50% and 90%. though i would be hard pressed to think it was as low as 50% in this design, they get warm, but i dont think they are losing 50% of the power to heat.

if you've got any formulas i would be happy to throw some numbers at them though.

But I suspect it's subject to the "garbage in, garbage out" rule and if I really cared I'd have to do it experimentally. Fortunately I don't really care because I can't do anything meaningful about it anyway.

I used the formulas here.

Lead angle <10 degrees. (measured)
Friction coefficient assumed 0.1, due to less than optimum combination of material and lubrication at a sliding speed of ~2 m/s (at 10,000 rpm motor speed).
Nominal pressure angle assumed to be 20 degrees. (optimal)
