YB's outrunner sportster

Still collecting parts at this point, but after seeing a few people go trannyless with the losi axles I have to try it for myself. Here is the heart of the project, turnigy outrunner motor will be chassis mounted and direct drive to the losi axles w/ wildboar driveshafts.

Here's my solution for XR outers on a losi axle. I cut the ends off of an Axial AR60 axle and drilled them to fit over the losi axle tubes. (15/32 drill bit is a perfect snug fit.) It's important to not drill too deep, so you leave enough "meat" in the axial plastic where the splines begin.

Re: YB's outrunner sportster

Made this little fixture for welding the losi/axial shafts together. First I drilled a hole the diameter of the axial shaft, then I drilled that same hole the diameter of the losi shaft to half depth. Then I cut right down the center line of the hole. This ensures that the two shafts are perfectly centered on each other before welding.

Used vice grips to hold everything tight while welding.

Shafts welded and cleaned up ready to be installed. The bearing for the axial shaft must be installed before welding because it won't fit over the losi shaft.

Very nice work ! "thumbsup"

Are you sure the bearings are needed,-the TAG-kit do not use them,-or maybe the extra support is useful with the plastic tubes.... ??? :)

I like the sensor-mod.

Really?? I thought that bearing was critical to keep the universal from binding? I know a lot of the TAG kits are in use, so I guess it isn't really needed but I believe it reduces side load on the other bearings.

Not this time, but I've done stuff like that before... :flipoff:

I had seen that link in Jens' thread and its very intriguing. I still don't fully understand how the sensors work though. I hope it will have good low end speed without cogging too bad, but if not I'll have to research more into adding sensors. Thanks!

Wheels & tires: silver Voodoos - narrowed, reduced, clipped, and vented (thanks Purptr8r! "thumbsup") CI foams, 2.2 buggy rims w/ .725 SLW hubs. Track width of the front axle is 11.25" with this setup.

Nice front axle"thumbsup" Great job"thumbsup""thumbsup"
What is the colour of the knuckles? Never seen them before...

Here are the sensors: Hall Effect Sensor Board | Equals Zero Designs

Are you planning on running a stock Losi axle in the rear or will you do the XR mod there too?

Re: YB's outrunner sportster

The knuckles are Vanquish and I'm not sure who made the Chubs, maybe hot racing.

Thanks for the sensor link!!! "thumbsup" "thumbsup" Thats cool stuff. I hope to use a micro sidewinder for small size and weight but if the outrunner cogs badly I will definitely be trying that sensor setup.

I'm going to run a stock rear losi axle. Some of you run stock 25t gears in the rear and HD 21t gears in the front for overdrive, right? Hows that working out?

Yes, 25t in the rear and 21t in the front. Works great, a must-have "thumbsup"

Re: YB's outrunner sportster

Made a servo mount/electrics plate/truss all-in-one. I shaved the shock tabs down to make room for the ESC on one side and the BEC on the other. All electrics except for the motor will be on the front axle.

Re: YB's outrunner sportster

Which ESC are you going to use?

youngblood 10-02-2014 05:03 AM

Re: YB's outrunner sportster

For ESC I'm going to use a Castle micro sidewinder. It fits under the 7950 servo, and the BEC will fit under the battery. Trying to fit the tie rod above the link mounts but below the pinion is proving to be tough but I think it will work.

Made the chassis and motor mount plate. Still need a few holes and braces. Just barely wide enough for the out runner motor.
