Narrowed Maxximizers : Update

Don`t know if anyone attemped this yet but I have seen where people have said you can`t narrow these wheels so I had to give it a shot. I have only done one but will do the other three this weekend. Overall width is now 1 3/8" and could have taken out up to another 1/2". I will get step by step pics as I do the others this weekend.

I will get the info and pics up sunday. Working 12hrs a day thru Friday and won`t have time to get them done till Sun. It took me two days this week to get the first one done .

Ok, here it goes.

Tools Used :
Hand saw (found this one at Wal-Mart)
Deburing Tool
Measureing Tape
Sharp Hobby Knife
* NOTE : JB Weld doesn`t stick to these wheels very well at all. I will let you all know when I find a glue that works good. *


The Tubes:


First I cut the lip off of the tube, then reattache the face of the wheel and mark the width I want.


The bosses for the bolts (red arrow) are the only limmiting factor to how much you can narrow the wheel.


I then laid the tube on the table (bolt side down) and used something close to the hight of the mak I made and used it to rest the marker on while i turned the tube. This will provide a nice straight and square cut line around the tube.


I cut the tude on the first one with the saw pictured above but decided to use the band saw on the rest. Even on the band saw the cut wasn`t perfectly square. Always cut on the outside of the cut line you made earlier so that the line is visible after the cut has been made, this will give you some visual refrence to square, and if it isnt square you can easily trim and sand the high sides to get them square.


Above is what I had left ater the saw, I will use all of it. The part I cut off I marked the same as I did the tubes but for 1/2" wide and then cut those. I used this to center and add support to the lip when everything is JB welded.

My tubes didnt turn out square so I had to trim them with the hobby knife and the sand them smooth again. The paper I used wasn`t marked but it felt like 120 or 180 grit.


Then I made a cut across the width of the 1/2" ring so that I could fit them inside the tubes.


Then mrked where the second cut needed to be made so the fit the inside of the tubes. Turned out to be about 1/2".


After fitting the ring this is what it looks like (below) with all the parts together. All thats left to do is apply the JB. I applied the JB to the inside of the tube then installed the support ring with about 1/8 to 1/4" stiking out then applied JB where the lip rests and set the lip on. I then turned it over (bolt side up) and laid them on a piece of paper and pressed down to make everything flush. Also I set a heavy book on them untill dry to keep everything nice and tight.



The Inner Rings :

For the first ring on each wheel I marked ( the same way I marked the tubes above) and cut 1/2" off them for a starting point. Then put the one I cut on the tube and then put an uncut one on top, oriented just like they are supposed to be when mounted. Then measure from the bolt surface of the tube to the first edge on the ring (the amount between the red arows in the pic is the amount to remove from the ring).


The edge you measure to should be flush with the bolt surface of the tube after it is cut, if it is below the bolt surface they probably won`t grip the tire beads tight enough when mounted.



Thats pretty much it, a little time consumeing but not that difficult. If you attempt this and screw up one or two of these parts never fear as each part of these wheels are available seprately, in pairs of coarse. One last pic of a narrowed Maxximizer beside one uncut. And if anyone comes up with a different method post it up, theres too many minds out there for this to be the only way.

Is it a must to cut off the outer ring? Or can you still achieve narrowing without removing the ring?

Jim511, Cutting the lip off is the only way I could come up with to narrow these as the narrowing must be done between the lip and the bosses for the bolts. I have wondered if the Aluminum tubes could be cut on the face and then redrilled and taped but I`ve not seen them in person so I don`t know if this would be possible.

Adict, Nice work. But the rims look to only be about 1/2-5/8" wide now.
Know that I don't have those wheels yet so I don't really know what i'm talking about. I dig the beadlock ring too looks great.

Thanks. The wheels measure 1 3/8" wide, uncut they are just under 2".

I narrowed a set of maximizer wheels this weekend. I scuffed the area really good, used jb weld, and let them set for 48 hours. When I put the tires on th wheels and tightened them all of my splices broke apart. What glue are you using and how is it holding?

You might want to try a good 5 minute epoxy.

I havent had time to try anymore glue yet, I`ll find out what it takes to hold theses together this weekend. Like YJesse said I thik Im going to try some epoxy, the kind you use in building RC aircraft, i have some 30 minute epoxy here that I`ll probably try. I got my kongs narrowed and realy need to get these wheels done this weekend.

I see you guys are using the older style beadlocks do you guys know if it's possible to narrow the new offset beadlocks

I have both, and I can't see why you couldn't.

I have 3 sets of maximizers and as far as I know all the rings are the same. The faces are the only difference.
