Default Weird question: What does the "M" in M2 or M3 stand for?

I just realized that I have no clue what the "M" stands for. I know it is a softness rating, but what does it mean exactly?

It's metric. M3 means the screw is 3 millimeters in diameter.

I don;t think he was asking a question related to nuts or bolts, since this is a tires and wheels thread. *Hint* Proline tires are rated M2 and M3. What does the "M" stand for?

Could be. Like WD-40 stands for "water displacement" and the 40 stands for it being the fortieth formula that worked the best.

Or the M could just be something for people to worry about and ask questions.
