Question What size drill bit for drilling wheels to use with Axial Hex's?

I got some shiny new Eritex Delrin Comp Heavy's in the mail a couple days ago for the Berg I'm building.

This is my first set of wheels so please correct me if I'm wrong, but I belive I need to drill out the center hole's to use them with Axial aluminum hex's.

My question is, what size drill bit should I use?

Thanks!

So I just got home from work, and I'm holding my drill bits up to the axial Hex's.

It looks like I need to drill each wheel's center hole out to 1/4"?

Is that correct? It doesn't look like it would leave much wheel for the wheel nut to hold onto?

You may want to check with Eritex on this but on my wheels I machine that hole to 9/32 .281 dia.

I guess I could. Or I could try to find some flat hex's. Just seems like I've read that a lot of wheels need to be drilled out.

That looks about right actually. Best I can measure with my dollar store tape measure anyways. lol.

Looks like my 1/4" drill bit would be 1/32 too small.....

i don't remember the size, but i used a Uni-Bit to drill out 3 sets of MSD's. i think it is the 3rd. step. just drill slow, you will get it.

I just talked to Gerame (Eritex) he suggested grinding down the hex's rather than drilling the wheels. He said it would be stronger that way.

So, I'm gonna give that a shot.

Now to find a grinder I can borrow.

Thanks for all the tips guys.

you can just use a sand paper instead of grinder... it's plastic right? a rough metal sand paper and a few strokes should do the trick.

The real Axial hex spacers are aluminum..............but yes, I would grind/sand/cut those down before altering some of Gerame's craftmanship.

I'm using Axial's upgrade aluminum Hex's on a Berg crawler.

These:

That smallest bit that sicks out needs to come off.

Yeah it's hard to take power tools to brand new parts...

Now I'm gonna go drill some air holes in them. lol

Well, I ground down the nipple on my hex's just now.

I don't have a dremmel yet, so I used my harbor frieght angle grinder.

They're not pretty, but I think they'll work.

Here's a tip for anyone who's doing the same:

Take the little set screws out of the hex's and put them aside before you start. They vibrate loose and vanish . Luckily I had a spare.

I think I'm also gonna shop around for some flat faced clamp on style hex's for future use.

Traxxas makes a blue anodized flat hex that works well and they only cost about $8 for 4 of them. That's what I've been using for my Double Fatties and the CAC wheels.

Thanks, I'll look for those. Are they the clamp on type?

I hate having the drive pins fall out whenever I take off a wheel, that's why I swapped out the stock Berg hex's.

no, no set screw but I haven't had one get stuck inside of the hex drive on the wheel.
