Cutting Board Tire Inserts
 

I liked the approach that the new Mayhem Wheels took, by adding a ridge to the rim to help with sidehills and undercuts.

Since I had a brand new set of Mayhem wheels already, I did the next best thing.

I took a cutting board and two hole saws to cut out a ring, and it is press-fitted to my existing mayhem wheels.

The below tire/wheel combo weighs in at 12oz even "thumbsup"

I was able to compare my setup to a set of ultimate comp wheels this weekend, and it was difficult to tell a different between the two.

Anyway, this beat spending another $160 on a set of wheels.

i dont have my glasses on and the pic is a little blurry... but did you install it between the 2 foams or on the outer side of the wheel?

I notched a stock HPI Rover Foam. The inner diameter of the insert is also a press fit onto the wheel.

To install, I had to put the insert and foam in the tire, before I could install it on the wheel. It made it easier to install without stretching and tearing the foam while you try to stretch the tire over the entire assembly.

hpi and hb are same company they merged in 2005

how about some specs? what is the OD of the ring?

Inner diameter was cut with a 2 1/4" hole saw. I believe the outer ring is 120mm which is ~4.72". I did have to use the dremel to open it up some.

Should work out nicely if you have external weights. If you use lead strips your screwed :cry:

Why's that? just cut the inner diameter, so that it fits over the weights ;-)

Made the shootout and my rig didn't blow up for once 8)

I'm probably going to up the weight 4 oz to each tire. There plenty of room on the wheel for stick on weights, or I could put them right on the insert.

How did you prevent the support from moving side to side (sliding on the rim)?

The channel cut foams and being a press fit keep them in place. A few stick on lead weights on each side probably wouldn't hurt either.

I also installed a pair in the front of my tuber using HB Rovers and non-memory Chisel Foams.

You can stick the lead weights on the side of the "cutting board" insert. There are just lead. You can make them curve sideways.

I have a pup that hasn't quite learned to stop eating cat food and windows sills, so she gets locked up during the day.

what is the dementions of the ones in the rovers and what thickness is the cutting board

2.25" ID
4.5" OD

I think 3/8" thick. Whatever the thickest one Bed Bath and Beyond sells...It was around $15.
