| Wheel Mods/ home made bead locks.
Figured I'd post up what I had done and let others add to it. I searched and couldn't find a deticated thread but if so this one can be merged with it. I used the mill on my Smithy for the job. I had a set of 2.2 DNA Snipers, (as well as a set of 1.9s) and I wanted to bring the weight down, so I figured I'd drill out the holes on the rears. I went larger than the hole originally was on the 2.2s and just enough to leave the champfer on the 1.9s. Afterwards, I drilled through the rims and added vent holes spaced out every other hole. One thing I did to get the holes centered, was to place a flat (plastic) piece under the wheel, and then I'd bring the drill down into the wheel turning it backwards to center it up before I tightened the vice down. Custom made some bead locks for my Fun Buggy project today. I'm using the Losi MRC wheels with Rock Crushers and wanted something unique. I had already done the "true" bead lock mod with the PVC. I added a full ring of weights on the fronts and none on the rears. Today I turned down some Aluminum stock I had laying around to maybe just over the size of the stock ring. Then I drilled a hole that would accept my nut driver. After looking at the wheel, I made the center hole large enough to see the fake lug nuts.( figured that would be about scale) Then I cut a set of 4 "thick" rings. I took the stock ring and marked the holes with a sharpie then center punched them. I took each one by hand and lined up the drill dead on and drilled the beadlock holes. After I had the rings I marked where I wanted a recess, and machined a groove about 1/2 the thickness into the ring. I'm using the stock MRC screws for now, but plan to get some button head screws to set the look off. It's a bit different than just the same old recessed screw hole. (which I almost did) Pics show the Smithy 1220XL I use, the comparison to the stock beadlock and how they look mounted. Hope you like them. |

| Thanks Jim. I sure miss make'n the comps, with my back killing me all the time I just don't think I could make the trip.:-( Anyway, I hope to be back in action by spring/summer series hopefully. I need to see if Geromy can spin some of these for his comp heavies. It took me all day to make these, ofcourse I'm turning them by hand. I did manage to re-drill-N-tap the stock Losi wheel for 3M hardware. The Bastard looks much better with the button head screws and the head turned out to be the same width as the groove I machined for them. Last edited by Krakker; 02-18-2010 at 09:40 AM. |

| Narrowing Berg wheels
Just wanted to add this link, I Narrowed a set of Berg aluminum wheels (stock). And thought this could go here as well. Wheels now sit at .800 wide at the mounting surface. http://www.rccrawler.com/forum/showt...25#post2307125 |

More wheel mods this past week. I narrowed the other set of Snipers as well as grooved the centers in a bit, just around the 6 holes. I think I should go more on them tho. I wanted them to a bit lighter than the fronts. I'lllprobably get some colored AX10 rings and drill the holes for 3M hardware., I'm just not like'n the gold rings. I'll get the pics up on these as soon as I can. Also narrowed the Eritex, Dirty Dozens to .800 wide. I think I'm going to machine some Brass I've got to fit in the wheel so I can weight the fronts. I can use them for shafty rigs and take'm off for use on the Bully. I'm making knuckle weights for it out of the Brass and will set screw them in. Here's the pics of the Eritex wheels. Gotta Love workin' with the Delrin wheels. |
