| Pin Tire with Comp Tire Sidewall - How To Write up Ok so I spent a while reading all the pin tire threads. I read every page on the boss claw foam tuning thread. I watched all the video's.....and finally I said to myself I’m going to make some. I have never made a set of tires before. This is only the way I did it and I’m sure there are much better methods. The supplies: 4 @ Pro Line Hole Shot 5.57" tall pin tires M2 compound. (They were on sale 20% off at LHS) 4 @ Losi Comp Claw tires (its what I had lying around) 1 @ bottle of glue 1 @ pair of scissors 1 @ understanding girl friend (we are on vacation at a lake) So here we go.... This is the understanding girl friend... Taking pictures as she likes to do. This is my work shop This is the glue I used I cut the side walls off the pin tires using regular scissors. I wanted to leave about 1.625" of the pin tread to make the tires with. Side walls cut off... The tread left You can see there were ribs on the inside of the tire. I cut just on the outside of them using them as a straight edge. I cut the losi side walls leaving as much of the tread as I could. This is a picture from later on in the process but it shows it well. Start by applying a small amount of glue to the side wall and sticking the tread to it. Then apply about 1/2" to 3/4" of glue to the side wall and continue sticking the tread to it. Some people "tack" the tread all the way around every inch or so first. This works but I didn't like going back after and trying to fill in the un glued spots. As you are working your way around the tire (attaching the side wall to the tread) I pull the sidewall tight as I glue it. This will allow you to use a longer strip of tread and making the tires taller. Plus I felt that by pre tensioning the side wall it might help it side hill even better. Once you get all the way around the tire there will be a slight excess of tread. Cut it off and glue to the ends together. I was left with this. Once you have one side glued go round the seam on the inside of the tire and apply a small amount of glue Once it is dry it is time to start on the other side. Start the same way as before tacking the sidewall to the tread. Then keep using the 1/2" of glue method to make your way all around. Remember to keep stretching the side wall as you go. Once you are almost all the way around it will look like this. At the very end I peel the small gap open and fill it with glue then seal it up. Here is the finished product next to a rover white. Both are un mounted. You can see this side by side shot of the natural side wall (un glued) laid over the finished tire and how stretching it makes it stand taller and creates a larger tire [/ Back to the lake for me!!! I'll add a bit of input. I have made quite a few sets of custom tires (including some pin tires with comp sidewalls) and I find that a thin glue is easiest to work with. However, regular CA just becomes too brittle when it is fully cured. I have found that this glue is the best to work with when gluing two pieces of rubber together: http://www.amainhobbies.com/product_...ughened-CA-1oz |

Thats a sweet workspot you got there. I have done a few cut n shuts and I use IC-2000 on them. Made some boss claws and they came out good. The IC glue worked great. But so far so good with your tires. All about practice and a steady hand oh and nerves of steel lol. |

| Haha....been there, done that. This is where I find that glue helpful that I mentioned earlier. It sets fairly quickly so no need to hold the pieces together for long periods of time (it sets in probably 30 seconds).

Wow that's incredible that they are "bigger" than the rovers I agree with Jeremy on the CA glue, mind you its from the dollar store () but it dries real hard so it is prone to cracking and issues like that. Hey the fact that you can't see the glue either, as they say, is a good thing right Tip: Wash both sets of tires throughly with about 50/50 simple green and water, and then rinse with hot soapy water (scrubbing) and then hot water. Takes out a ton of the dirt and mold release stuff that can make glue a pain to stick And heck the tires are stickier also |
