1.55" Proline TSL SXs

I wanted a bit smaller tire for my Honcho scaler:

It needs to sit a bit lower and these tires rub a bit on the body (which I dont want to cut).

I really wanted to run the SXs as I've had good luck with them on other scalers, but any wheel larger than a 1.55" looks too big on this short wheelbase truck. So, I decided to cut up a set of 1.9" Proline TSL SXs. If you cut out two complete sections of lugs, they fit together perfectly and are the correct size for these RC4WD 1.55" wheels. These tires, mounted with some cut down RC4WD foams come in at 3.75" tall. Here are a few pictures of how they turned out:

And here is how they stack up to other tires....from the left we have an unmounted 1.9" Proline TSL SX, an unmounted 1.55" RC4WD Rock Stomper and on the right, the CNS TSL SX mounted with foam.

I'll get the rest finished this week and see how they look on my scaler.

Nice work... Lets see some action shots... "thumbsup"

Thanks man! I hope to have them all finished up soon and get some runtime on them this week sometime.

BTW, I forgot to mention that with the cutout in the location shown above, none of the lettering on the sidewall was removed. "thumbsup"

looks great!
i've never cut down a tire but you made these look easy enough to do. i also like how you left the lettering.

Yep, cutting down tires isn't too difficult, just use a good thin, quick drying glue to butt joint them together (only a light coating), then a rubberized CA to seal the seam and it'll hold up well! "thumbsup"

Nice job there Jeremy! Can't wait to see the finished product.

JeremyH 02-20-2011 02:59 PM

Thanks man! I've got three of the wheels made up and mounted...but it gets put on hold for now...I am taking the kiddo to the zoo.

looks good, being smaller makes them look wider to.

demonoid369 02-20-2011 07:13 PM

that is kick a**

was wondering when some one would try that, have you ever thought of doing that with the baja claws? also been wondering how that would come out as?

JeremyH 02-20-2011 07:33 PM

Never tried it with the claws.....they should be fairly easy to cut in shut....just make the cut a V shape across the top of the tread.

OK, here are some action shots:

Overall, I am REALLY impressed with these tires! I used a two stage foam in the (larger firm inner and thin soft outer) and they hook up perfectly. Even though these tires are smaller, I was climbing stuff that the RC4WD tires couldnt make.

scottkerley 03-04-2011 09:42 PM

Ok,I must be just plain stupid (probably) but I just don't get it,how can you take a section out of a tire like that and not have the sidewall wrinkle when you pull it back together..................like I said Jeremy,I think I'm stupid ! btw, they look amazing!

JeremyH 03-05-2011 06:02 AM

Haha....sometimes tire will wrinkle....but usually when the new OD is a LOT different than the old. That is why, on super tires, we use a different sidewall. You should have seen the first set of super tires I built....they were terribly wrinkled.
