I can't believe this issue comes up again and again. In what situation is a tire with no foam better than, say, a tire with a matching foam from Crawler Innovations?

When crawling dry rock structures and don't want to spend $60-70 on foams.

I disagree, there is a reason most people use foam, its not just to throw money out the window.

And what foams cost 60-70$? Thats new to me.

CI foams are about 25-30 bucks for all 4 tires... where the hell you get 60-70.00 from?

I just moved back from Australia. Foams there were about $60. I haven't priced foams locally. For my purposes.... a light crawler with soft tires and no foams worked well for technical, rocky crawling.

well here in the states, the foams are much less costly and for my terrain, no foam tires would never work, rocks or no rocks..

Try a good set of CI foams, as the price is a great break from AU.
You will feel and see the difference.
I don't care, it's your rig, but they really do make a huge difference

I also have to wonder how well the tire bead is going to hold up while consistently getting pinched, you might end up with a lot of slices around the bead after so long...

Simple thought..... Do you run your 1:1 tires without air ?

Nope, they wont work correctly. Foams in rc tires allow the support the air normally gives.

I don't have foams in my 1:1 tires.

If I had beadlocks on my 1:1 I could run pretty low pressures. And I've seen some drive with ambient pressure tires. Granted it was a very light vehicle with tracktor tires.

Austar actually sell wheels which have valves so you can adjust the pressure. I have a set in the 2.2 flavour. I think I saw some 1.9 ones too. Might actually make the spare I keep dragging along usefull.

I had bias ply tires on a old wheeler that ran airless even on the freeway they were just that stiff the austar tires air system just plain sucks i riped holes in the sidewalls in the first day then sealed the holes up and got new holes on the next run when they did hold air they bounced like mad and seeing as how foam tire insurts are so easy to make your self i dont see any reason to buy them or run with out them

Actually in my 1:1 rig I run the tires with 4psi in the rocks. For crawling that's how it's done. Dozens of times I have helped people who were suck get our of their situation just by airing down their tires. It creates more surface area on the ground reducing the psi footprint and givies you much more traction not to mention a way smoother ride.

That's why the correct foam in an rc tire is important. They are just rubber balloons without the chords of fiberglass & steel supporting the structure like 1:1 tires. Single digit pressures are not uncommon while wheeling 1:1 because the tire can take it. No foam in a balloon and it just flops around and wads up. Total shit show.

I expect no better from that assclown. What's funny is 1 of the 3 videos I've seen from him was when he put those on his wraith.
