Default KMC XD-795 wheel review

Received the wheels and immediately ripped open the box to the most beautiful thing a scalers eyes have ever seen.

Tore them out of their packaging to get a closer look.

Here are the 3 pieces that make up the wheel. The wheel, can, and rear bead lock ring.

Backside of wheel

Some assembly required, haha. There is some really small hardware and some really small Allen wrenches involved. And don't worry, the wrenches are included.

Once the detail hardware is assembled, mounting the tire literally took maybe one minute. If you plan on running the Proline TSL SX, plan on spending more time as usual. Also, the wheels are 1.200 wide so you will probably want to grab some wide inner foams from Crawler Innovations if you are already running their foams, which you should be.

Five screws on the rear ring and that's it. The disk rotors fit but you can not run the caliper due to the design of the spokes. I don't consider that a downfall though once you see the wheels.
Now go get some!!

What's the story behind the set screws? Do they hold the front bead?

No. They are cosmetic. The only bolts that hold the wheel together are the 5 on the rear ring. Wheel slides into can forming the front bead area and clamping it in place by assembling the rear ring on, which forms the rear bead. Exact same idea as the Proline SC wheels. Also similar to the way a RC4wd stamped steel wheel holds together in the way of the can.

Here is a pic by pic breakdown showing assembly.
Here is your traditional bead lock wheel design. A wheel and 2 rings(outer and inner).

Normally you install the wheel into the tire then bolt on one rig at a time with however much hardware the ring requires.
These are a little different but way simple and quick.
With these, you have 3 pieces in way of the wheel, can, an inner ring as seen in the OP.
Assembly is where things are really different but lovely.
Install the can into the wheel.

Install the wheel into the can making sure you have it on the right side of the tire if you are running directional tread tires as I do. Don't want 4 left side tires.

Now you can see on the inside where the rear bead had been formed.

Here is one outside of a tire.

And know you install the rear ring which clamps everything together forming the bead lock design with only 5 screws instead of.......

(I'm aware the screws were not tightened all the way and yes the ring will sit flush when done)

My black set of 795's are sitting for me at the border as well as my CI foams and X2 2.2 Boggers! Now I just have to wait for my billet transmission for my Cummins to arrive so I can make one trip to the border and pick them all up.

You'll be happy with the wheels and tires and foams.

Vanquish makes amazingly detailed stuff. I just bought every part they make for my Wraith kit build. Attention to detail is top notch.

Thanks for the detailed pics!

These puppies are awesome! I just picked mine up from my LHS... just wish I had a set of spare tires to mount them to, but alas, I have yet to decide which tires to mount up on these bad boys! Decisions, decisions, decisions...

Cheers,
T

These look nice. Tire and wheel clearance at knuckle look ok, are you running non-ackerman VP arms? How is overall width with these wheels vs stock Wraith? I'm looking to maybe run these with Ripsaws. Have you bent a wheel yet?

That rig has been sold so I don't have the wheels anymore.
The width vs stock will depend on which hub you want to run. I prefer .350 or .225 hubs. .475 will put you a bit wider than stock. I run the normal VP steering arms. That rig, while I owned it, took a couple bad falls. One was bad enough it broke the front stinger and bent a couple links. Wheels were fine.

Thanks, I'm looking to stay stock width or tiny bit narrower and still clear my new VP non-ackerman knuckles. I was thinking .225 or .350 hubs, by normal VP steering arms, do you mean ackerman or non-ackerman?

I would do the .350 hubs. Non Ackerman arms. These are the ones that come standard with the knuckles. The Ackerman arms are much longer and require the appropriate tie rod for them also.

They are 1.000" wide. I was hoping for 1.2" as advertised. VP measures their wheels from outside to outside of the rim, not the actual bead seat area as they should. But Steve and the boys are aware of their errors. Same with the Method racing wheels which are listed as 1.000" but actually .800"
