Re: How to shave tires??

Dremel with sanding drum and bench grinder is what I use.

Re: How to shave tires??

I used a lexan scissors to cut off the side lugs. Then a dremmel with the sanding attachment. I also was very careful with the dremmel. You don't want too much pressure, just enough to skim the surface.

My favorite method = Lexan scissors + Dremel Motosander.

So next question, why shave them?

railripper 03-16-2013 08:40 AM

I don't..but if I were then the above methods is what I'd use. I don't do comps or want the best grip as it's not very scale to me I'm a scaler(tires are the most scale items on my rigs sadly). So any brand scale tire I get is what I use and if I can't conquer the obstacles, then so be it:thumbup:

Performance or looks.

Sometimes shaving them tends to help the vehicle handle better on the rocks. Imo and from what I've seen/read, I think its mostly used for crawler comps and class 2-3 and ttc scale comps...especially if you're not after scale points.

Re: How to shave tires??

There's a couple of reasons to shave sidewalls on a comp crawler tire.

1. You can get a tire to become even softer then it was.
2. Less hang ups and push outs in tight areas where the side of the rig is against a rock face.
3. That little bit of extra clearance between gates. Sometimes the difference in a penalty or not, is the length of a side lug.

I shaved my Ripsaws and I saw better grip on the rocks and they do not pack up with mud like they did prior.

Addicted got it, they bag a lot more which can really help, less to get caught on, some people like the shaven look no pun intended. Most will combine shaving with sipping to help with grip ect.

Re: How to shave tires??

In a comp situation, a V notch or something similar. Lugs on the sidewally has a tendency to make the truck move in reverse while throttling forward. Shaving these lugs off allows you to slip and use the face of the tire for progress and traction. Hopefully that makes sense:shock:

Re: How to shave tires??

I use these.
TowerHobbies.com | Xuron Track Cutter

And my dremel tool with a 60 grit sanding drum.
Wear safety glasses and a dust mask unless you really enjoy the smell and taste of burned rubber.

To make the sidewalls really smooth, I used a spare axle shaft and hex, to make a mandrel for my drill.
Chuck the axle in the drill, bolt on the rim and tire, spin with drill, sand with dremel.. Done
I tried the 4" grinder method. Destroyed the tires. Took too long and too hard to do. The 4" grinder is to aggressive. Takes too much material off.

With a 80grit flap disc I found ghd grinder worked awesome. I didn't ruin my first znx only set of shaved tires. Took me one beer to shave both sides of all four. I drink beer pretty fast.
