Default Pictorial Tutorial... Making Dually Singles from Clod rims

I am putting this here because I think more than just Clod people or crawlers will be interested. MODS: If you feel it belongs elsewhere, feel free to relocate.

Picked myself up a set of Dually tires for my crawler and decided to sit down and try to make wheels. I've heard people do it but never saw anyone show how to do it. Sooooo... I picked up some badly hacked wheels I got in a deal and decided to figure it out on my own.

One thing I left out... you will absolutley have to glue the inside tire bead since there is only one edge. I recommend gluing both sides but that's your call. We cut the inside bead to give extra clearance for links when turning or articulating.

Time: 12 minutes for each wheel

What ARE those tires? Dually.....what's that? Sorry for being dumb, but I don't know much about this. Am interested, however.

Thanks much Dirk...

thosj, yes, those are dually tires. Usually you can't buy them separate but a friend of mine bought a set so he could have the rims and sold me the four tires.

Think I might try this on some Sayville wheels. I like the wheels but they are really, really wide. Doing a traditional narrowing of them will still not narrow them enough. Think I'll cut it really skinny and glue the inside ring back on.

Here it is in finished form:

Finished my homemade wheels, a quick spray job and mounted the duallies on COP. It is taking some getting used to seeing this skinny tires on her. :? Brief testing on the "carpet crawling grounds" proves them to be pretty good so far but out on the rocks will tell the real tale.

I will say the truck is a bit lighter but I don't know if it's enough to make a huge difference. The ground PSI is where these tires might prove their value.

Here's two posers and then a sequence of images showing it climbing the rolled carpet at an awkward angle. It remained quite stable even though I thought it was going to roll at one point.

cool! Any loss of lateral stability being that skinny?

Also...maybe you can clear this up: Exactally, how tall are they?

From my limited testing, there doesn't seem to be that much lateral stability lost. The math doesn't add up as you would think they truck would be much more prone to rolling since the tire is narrower.

Of course I haven't had it out yet... perhaps one day when I have some time to kill, I'll do a more indepth comparison.

The real advantage is that the servos can turn them much easier. Even with the truck almost at rollover point, I could manage to tweak the wheels enough to save me from rolling.

As for height, side by side they are the same height as a Giant Trac.

They look sweet, but your right they don't seem to be very stable.
