| Weighted wheel question
Hi folks. First post here. Thanks for letting me visit. I'm not a crawler. I race dirt oval with my SCT. My question is about weighted wheels. Since I've never used them, could those of you who have say it would or would not benefit someone running high rpm's? Thanks! |

Weighting the wheels on low speed crawlers / trail rigs is ok because it's relatively low rpms so you dont have to worry about balance issues. I personally would not do it on a high speed rig like a short course truck. you may have shake / vibration issues due to unbalance, your going to have slightly slower throttle response with more wieght to spin, plus your probably going to be more prone to breakage with the extra weight on the wheels that the vehicle was not designed for. On a high speed race vehicle you would want to weight the chassis with stick on lead weights if you need to add extra weight for some reason. |

Jus seconding what was already said. My go-slow scaler has 6 Oz in the wheels plus more on the axle. My rock-racer wraith has heavy aluminum wheels and that is all. My brushless slash has light weight wheels and 4 Oz mounted under the front skid plate to help steering under acceleration. The faster you go the less weight you want to try to rotate. |

Oval track set up is more suspension and chassis tuning than anything..Agreed that wheel weight can be an issue..However if you add weight so that it is balanced you shouldnt experience any vibration problems..Professionals balance their wheels/tires using modeling clay..less vibration in general equals better efficiency and faster speed...If you can balance the wheels using the larger weights then give it a shot but its going to take more power to get your truck moving giving you less battery time..not to mention more stress on the drivetrain. My guess is you want more weight on one side to gain traction or, improved turn in...you can do that but ,use suspension and chassis tuning to accomplish that goal...Not heavy wheel weights. Alot more comes into play as well but ask around your local track for some tips and tricks..im sure someone would be willing to help you get the truck set up. If not, them PM me and ill give you my old set up I used ,if I can find the papers Last edited by 6sharky9; 07-24-2014 at 01:24 PM. |
