Default The different 2.2 Comp Wheel

Before anything else, I know I'm not reinventing the 2.2 comp wheel but this is my take on a 2.2 wheel without the inner foam.
I have seen the Super class run something like this and it seems to work so why not on a 2.2?

On with the pics!

This is the wheel face and the inner part (6.0 size).
It's made out of lexan for testing purpose, especially because I got these parts made for free!

The 3D printed parts (for the 2 wheels).

The inner ring put together.

It fits!!! (this is made for a Bully v1 but I could easily make a mount for other knuckles)

I love the process of designing something on the computer and then see if the parts fit and work!

Another thing that was a must was no glue on wheels and also I'd like to be able to mount the tires back on normal bead locks.
So, to mount these I only need 4 small pieces to be cut on each bead.

Another small victory, It all manages to go inside the tire!!!

As for the weight I can add more weight and and it stays lower.

All mounted!

As a bonus I was able to mount it all in one go.
Since I was not sure I would the mount on the knuckles is a 2 piece design.
I still need to add some foams on the side of the tires buts so far everything fits and that's already a good thing.

Thanks!
Now I just got to see if it actually works...
Maybe it will be too stiff.
I already got some foam to add on the sides of the lexan and then I can test it.

Great work.

Love the design. I think the rim rules need to be looked at. Allowing different wheel designs to come up. Need a maximum OD that's all. Let all the creative guys build some crazy wheels likes these.

Nothing wrong with the current rules, the wheel makers just got comfy with a certain way and never pushed farther. These wheels look legal, as long as the lexan plates don't exceed the listed outer ring max od. 2.55" or whatever it is, not a spec I have memorized.

Sweet design, you beat me to making such a deep center set. I've been wanting to build a set for a few years.

I ran a design like this for about a year. It was a little different. Good for a slower driving style. Hard hits made the weights spin out of position even with two set screws. It was also bouncy at speed. A split ring clamp like a bicycle seat post clamp is what I wanted to try but lost interest. The low CG was amazing. It allowed me to run my rig with crazy belly clearance and still side hill good.

I don't think there anything wrong with the wheel rules and I'm pretty sure these are legal.
If I put the carbon fiber face and paint the 3d parts black you won't even notice anything. It's just like any other carbon fiber wheel...
Rules don't need to be changed every time.
The fun part is thinking about how to improve within the existing rules.

@ Josh,
Normally I go for pretty slow crawling but only testing will tell how good or bad they are.
What outer foams were you using?
Right now I'll try soft, I might add a soft tuning ring if I have too much bounce.
Did you only use on the front wheels?
The rotating weight is not something that worry's me much. I can always drill a 3mm hole on the knuckle and get the set screw on it.

I used the CI med outer. Tried the soft but it bottomed out a lot.
Post 87 shows some good pics.

It was time for the test drive!
Overall it worked. I didn't feel the car jumpy or anything like that.

The only problem was that I broke one wheel.
To be honest it was not so much a design flaw but user and material flaw.
While mounting the wheels I tightened one of the tabs on the lexan part too fast and it broke. Therefore, on that wheel face, I only had 3 screws fully tight to hold the beadlock. Even with some washers It didn't hold for too long.

Starting to come loose...

And, during a dig....

... it broke the 3 other lexan tabs.

I really think that the test went well.

I only have one video of the first course of the day.

I was driving BAD and I don't like the Rovers on 1'' wheels. They become too fat and low.
Next step is making these part (with some changes) out of 1.5mm G10 and mount with Voodoo's.

Great work, great to see new idea's are still flowing and being developed within existing rules.

Lets try this again shall we?

I have had this parts laying around for some time now but didn't have time to put the wheels together.
I changed the design a bit and now they are made of G10. I also had some custom wheel faces made since I was at it.

The hardware alone weighs a lot!
I would love to have everything aluminum but no budget for that now...

My main concern is this...
The increase in rotating mass is double of my previous setup.

The four tabs that need to be cut on the tire.

Soft on Soft is my current setup.

Some foam rings were added to the tire sidewall

Pulling the beadlock

And after some time the finished product.
These take much longer to assemble then normal wheels...

She's a pig!

But there's some nice space over there!

New vs Old

All done!

Nothing to see here!!!

STABLE! (And very out of focus!!)

Damn, after such a struggle to get my Bully v1 under the 2Kg mark now I'm up again...

So now I have to do some testing and see if this is worth it or not.
What do you guys think?

Great job, keep it up. What is the cost t make versus buying comparable wheels?

I didn't have any serious interest on them so I haven't look at the cost yet...
Maybe I should!

Wild guess would be around 50 or 60$ for 2 wheels but this is just thinking out loud.

Well....
After some 8 or 9 years of starting to design this style of wheels, this is where I'm at!

Very happy with this latest evolution!
