Default Crawler Innovations Reviews the RC4WD 2.2 Bully Comp Tire

Crawler Innovations reviews (and by review CI means that we show you what the tires do on the rocks, not talk about them) the new RC4WD 2.2 Bully Competition Tire for RC Rock Crawlers of the competition flavor. By referencing "comp" it means that the rc rock crawler is not scale to a 1:1 rock crawler; it means the rc rock crawler vehicle is designed for all out performance within the class rules it competes in.

In this video, Crawler Innovations is using three different trucks, built to USRCCA 2.2 Pro and 2.2 Shafty specifications. Each truck has a build thread linked to it below;

First truck in video is a 2.2 Shafty:
T1E AX-10 Moon Buggy build by Crawler Innovations

2nd Truck featured is 2.2 Pro, Y Town Crawlers Double Agent XR-10;
http://www.rccrawler.com/forum/axial...gent-xr10.html

3rd Truck featured is 2.2 Pro, Y Town Crawlers Secret Agent XR-10;
--- The Crawler Innovations XR-10 Build --

All of the tires, foams, and wheels used in this video are off the shelf parts and unmodified. Anyone can purchase these parts. There will be a full write on RCCrawler - News, Reviews, Videos and much more! in the tires and wheels section. I'll try to link back to it here once it's posted on RCC. All trucks used Crawler Innovations 6 Bolt Wheels that use Vanquish Products SLW hubs, all trucks used Crawler Innovations Double Deuce Foams in one flavor or another.

Thank you for watching.

It's always wonderful to have options. The comp tire market is small and with the Losi Boss Claw discontinued, it left the Ottsix Voodoo as the lone competition pin tire. The voodoo is a world class proven tire for its rubber compound and tire design, however it's huge. No titles were ever won with the tire in stock form. Which brings me to the RC4WD bully comp tire. The size is perfect. I was disappointed that rc4wd used a thick tire carcass for the bully tire. I was really hoping it was going to be like the Baja Claw TTC Radial tire carcass because that tire performs great when set up properly. Here's a pic of that tire on a yeti:

Here's a pic of one of four sets CI purchased for this review:

One thing about rc4wd rubber beads is that they like to leave them long for bead lock installation. This is a comp tire and we won't be using heavy bead locks. I set up the review to test four sets of tires, two sets on 1.50" width 6 bolt wheels and 2 sets on 1" width 6 bolt wheels. Here are the tools I used for the job:

Views: 5838
Size:  86.8 KB

First up, flip the tire inside out and trim half the bead off;

Next up is air holes. Please people, if you are using Crawler Innovations foams, vent your tires. I had to run 8 vent holes in these tires. The tire carcass is so thick, it needed that many to breathe instantly when touching a rock. You truly can tune your tire compression with air holes and foams. The typical hobby lobby leather punch using the 2mm hole;

Glad to see some new comp tars on here. Looks like we will still need to do some work to these to get the last little bit out of them but at least you aren't cutting up $80 worth of tires right off the bat.

The purpose of this review, is to keep things easily obtainable for the average person. To be able to buy an off-the-shelf tire that needs no major cut n shut modifications to perform correctly. And the idea to use off-the-shelf foams that work with this off-the-shelf tire perfectly so that it's a repeatable process for everyone and the playing field is even.

So with that said, the tires were not modified, and were used straight up out of the bag other than foams and the necessary modifications for proper installation, and full pin pattern.

Overall we gave them a 4 out of 5 rating. Hopefully the video shows what they are capable of in stock form.
In CI's opinion the pin pattern is too tight. Almost like a hot bodies megabite truggy tire. So of course we had to trim...

Getting back to the pin pattern... The bully pin tire resembles the Losi boss claw pattern. So... Rather than re-invent something, I went back to the a legend in our industry and new Y Town Crawlers Owner Jake Wright. CI has a set of Losi boss claw in Super Size made by Casey C and have the Jake Wright pattern. Here it is:

This is great ... Real world testing ... Same tires same foams put on multiple trucks driving the same lines ... Not different trucks with different tires ...great to see reviews even if I'm a voodoo guy... There needs to be more of this stuff for parts and products .... I didn't personally have a good experience with these tires maybe they were " too new" and needed more breaking in .... But I'm certainly not biased even if tires like this will hurt my business .... Keep up the good work Eddie ..... I'll be over at PURPMART narrowing some voodoos

A few pics from testing today out in the Dallas metroplex. The new open pin pattern really woke these tires up I am pleased to report.

The above pic; left tire is on a 1.50" 6 Bolt Wheel and the right tire is on a 1" 6 Bolt Wheel.

In the interest of fairness and honesty of this review, Ottsix posted on their facebook that both of the 2015 USRCCA 2.2 Pro & 2.2 S Class winners were using UN-CUT / UN-Modified Voodoo Pin tires. Congratulations to both of the winning drivers and to Ottsix for the Voodoo Pin Tire.

Excellent review, did you narrow your foams for the tires? I can't tell from the pictures and did not see that in the review. I made my CI DD foams narrow to fit in the tire better. I will try your pin pattern also, I only removed two rows of pins to get an improvement. Crawler Innovations Rocks!

Thank you, I was surprised to see so many uncut Voodoo's out there. I know that most of the drivers have multiple sets and I figure that the uncuts came out on top during testing.

Thanks for the write up, Eddie. The idea is to keep it simple, and you proved it.

Appreciate it.

These tires are easy to mount on VP wheels. I'm excited to get them on the rocks.

This thread is quite old, but I still wonder if it is worth it to trim and vent the bully comp tires? Is there really a big difference in climbing/crawling capability? Especially on smooth and slippery rocks
Maybe its just me but I haven't noticed huge differences in the videos, I'm new to this comp thing.
