Exclamation I've had it...

A while back I ordered a set of RC4WD 5-lug Wagon Wheels for my SCX II. Once I got them I noticed they were pin-drive, not hex. So I ordered some hex adapters (also from RC4WD).

Trying to mount them today, I noticed another thing: The pin-drive hub had indentations in the screw holes to allow more of the screw to go through, while the hex adapters didn't. This made it so only about 2mm of the screw was showing on the other side. Now I can't mount them. What I can do is tear my hair out...

I'm posting this before sending an email to RC4WD (and/or RPP) for advice. Is this a defect or have others had this problem?

Are you using stock axial hex's? if so you will probably have to file/grind the nipple off them so that the adaptor can sit back farther and flush on the hex. the hole in the adaptor is only 4mm and the nipple on the hex is 7mm and might be your problem.

That's not the problem. As far as I've tested, the hex adapter fits fine. It's the fact that the adapter makes the screw so much shorter that's it's impossible to mount the two pieces.

Now you're probably thinking "use longer screws" but I don't have much on hand (much less 20 of them) and the ones I've tried don't fit.

Those adapters weren't made for wagon wheels. Simple as that.

Well RPP's description said that they did (as well as on RC4WD's site. Regardless, what should I do now?

We need NateDog to chime in here...

I'm in the middle of his 38-page long(!) Vaterra Acender build thread and somewhere in there I swear he said RC4WD makes your choice of 5 or 6 lug, pin or hex drive wagon wheels.

(i think...)

Needless to say, it sucks when you have new steel parts that need modding to work.

Edit: looks like the deep dish 5 lug is a hex drive, regular 5 lug is a pin drive and the "OEM" 6 lug (looks slightly different than a wagon wheel) is also hex drive.

Is it too late to return them?

i just went thru this with these, my hex adapters had threaded holes so I didnt need the nuts, so they screwed in from the front..and bolted it all together.... did you get the hex adapters that the holes were threaded?

Are th adapters threaded? Can the bolt go through from the front of the wheel? You'll lose the nice scale nuts though

Looking at the pics I think the hex adapter has threaded screw holes. I was going to suggest what the two above me said ^

Lol, the hex kit definitely comes with threaded holes, bolts go in from the front of the wheel, not the back with a nut like the standard adapter.

They're actually way easier and faster to assemble this way too ;)

Yeah they're threaded. I tried to mount the adapter without the nuts and it still didn't have enough length to cover both sides of the wheel. And when I pushed them together really hard to try and screw them in, they wouldn't stay.

I'll try screwing them in from the front later today.

I hate to say it, but It sounds like you need to get some new screws.

If you want to keep the scale look with the nuts, get long set screws. That's what I like to use since it eliminates the head of the SHCS on the back of the hex adapter.

RC4WD says otherwise.

The problem here is the brand - RC4WD. When you buy RC4WD you get China quality at American-made prices. Start shopping elsewhere from now on.

In the meantime email RPP. They'll get back to you quickly. You can also email RC4WD, but their customer service is as bad as their products. They might get back to you and if they do it sure won't be quickly.

My experience with rc4wd has been pretty good overall. Their customer support was great last February for me.

Consider yourself lucky. The issues with their products are wide spread and they are notorious for having bad customer service.

Both. I've had my own problems with RC4WD as have friends. Look online (this forum or even a quick Google search) and you'll see lots of problems with RC4WD products and customer service.

The issues range from brand new RC4WD beadlock wheels being unfinished, their beadlock wheels being made incorrectly and actually cutting the bead off of brand RC4WD tires upon mounting which RC4WD hasn't ever stood good for, kits missing parts, etc. Like I said, the issues are vast. And customer service is slow to respond if at all. And when RC4WD actually stands good for the issues, it takes forever to receive replacements because it comes on the slow boat from China or wherever their warehouse is.
