The acetol ring is used to save weight really. I doubt using an aluminum ring will make much difference as they would be machined pretty smooth also.

Incision wheels have an aluminum locking ring right?
The key to your reply is "machined pretty smooth". That is the problem I have been trying to point out all along. Why would you want a "pretty smooth" surface for the foam to try to grip on to? In the same way you would not make a thumb screw without a knurl on the OD, or a crawler tire with no tread to grip the rocks. To be fair, I had this same problem with my Vanquish bead lock wheels (seen below). I solved that problem by machining two radial grooves in the OD of the aluminum sleeve. These two simple grooves provide the foams with enough traction to stop them from shifting on the sleeve. The SSD sleeves are too thin to cut grooves but during the manufacturing process you could easily machine a pair of ribs on the OD to accomplish the same thing namely provide the foam something to hold on to.

Note in the pic below that the foam still inside the tire actually shows a witness mark where it has conformed to one of the grooves in the sleeve which is proof that the foam now has something to grip on to. I'm not trying to bash anyone here, I'm just pointing out a design problem that I, and countless others, have encountered and how easy it would be to fix.

If the ring is too smooth why dont you put like grip tape or something on it?

My point exactly! Why should I have to put tape, or rubber bands, or grooves or anything else on the sleeve to hold the foam in place???? If the sleeves were designed with simple ribs or grooves during the manufacturing process this would not be an issue in the first place. When you add in the fact that the CI DD inner foams have a narrow width at the ID, the problem is just exagerated. The very fact that people have to resort to grip tape, rubber bands, grooves, sand paper, etc, etc. should be a huge wake up call to the manufacturers that there is a problem that needs to be addressed! I don't understand why any manufacturer would not want to improve their product especially given that such a small change would make such a dramatic improvement.

Regardless what you do with the wheel, all foams stretch over time and have to be taped anyways. Especially foams used in U4. I have a pile of old well used 1.9 CI DD foams that easily fit 2.2 wheels now...... my old 2.2 foams well that's another story...

Keep up the good work SSD!!

I'd rather a cheaper product than a product with unnecessary manufacturing processes.

Here's a thread you started awhile back where even I offered a simple fix that had fallen on deaf ears. This small issue has been solved for years now...

Awesome wheels SSD, looking forward to 1.9's

A band aid is typically meant to be a temporary fix. I switch out gasketing tape when foams/tires wear out...

The problem is you want wheel manufacturers to fix a specific foam product issue. You should be asking the foam manufacturer to make the inside face of the foam sticky.

Or just use the cheap easy fixes already suggested.

Well here is the fix I came up with. At least now the foams have something to grip onto rather than the smooth surface.

SSD wheel before:

SSD wheel after:

Yes, you are. You're expecting an aftermarket part to work with every other aftermarket part. You obviously don't work on real cars very often or you'd understand how ridiculous that is.

Back when I had the time and money to modify real cars instead of toy ones, I had a saying, "bolt-ons aren't" and that holds true in the RC world too. When you start mixing and matching aftermarket parts, you're going to have competing design ideas, competing physical dimensions & tolerances, and so forth. It's just part of the hobby.

Out of curiosity, did you post in any of CI's threads to complain that his foams don't work with SSD wheels?

It's interesting how I've never heard such a complaint before and every clamp ring I've ever seen has a smooth finish.

This is a nonsense thread. This is the first and only time I've heard of a troll complaining about smooth wheel centers. I've had vanquish, axial, ssd, venom, hpi, and locked up wheels. All of them are smooth, not a single one has machined grooves. And honestly the foams can't move that much to cause a massive difference. I just put Ci foams in pitbull rock beast xor on locked up wheels and they were a pretty tight fit. I'm certainly not worried about the foams slipping.
