| 1/8 buggy wheels vs 2.2/3.0 sc wheels
2.2 crawler tyres on my yeti and wraith are no good for pavement it rolls over. I have tried 1/10 buggy tyres on the wraith but they don’t look right. I’m currently using 1/8 buggy wheels on the yeti, it’s a good size and keeps at least three wheels on the pavement. ButI need to use 17mm hex adapters, I have broken 2 sets of rear axles with this setup. I’m about to order the ssd wide axle to get rid of the adapters and because I need axles. I won’t be able to use 17mm hex so I’ll need wheels and tyres. The sc tyres look like they have a smaller outer sidewall but are the sidewalls short enough to resist tucking under the rim and rolling the truck? |

Look at the bare wheel and you'll see how the tire is constructed. The barrel of the wheel is large almost to the 2.2 face so there isnt a whole lot of room for the sidewall to roll over onto itself.

Tires rolling over the rim at speed is the caused by cheap / weak foam design and material. Crawler Innovations is now offering a new "Heavy Weight" or High Speed foam insert to remedy this issue. More sizes will be released over the coming months, including a 2.2 /3.0 design, and a new 1:8 design. In the mean time, if you want to test the difference yourself, the Heavy Weight 2.2 Standard on the rear of your RC alone will make a huge improvement and allow the rear tires to drift instead of fold over. Crawler Innovations is now offering a new density closed cell foam specifically aimed at heavy weight RC cars, 10 pounds and heavier. Currently available sizes are the 5.5 & 6.0 Double Deuce and 2.2 Tall & 2.2 Standard Deuce's Wild. A stiffer inner is definitely a welcomed design for my uses, bravo CI! Now how about a firmer outer open cell? The older single stage are a bit bouncy and the firm outer foams are a bit soft at times for me. |

SC wheels are 4-1/4" tall, requiring a gear change. Banditos or Street Fighters work well. 1/8 scale are about 4-3/4" tall, 17mm hubs, no bueno. Redcat Racing Aftershock SC truck tires are 4-3/4" tall, 12mm hex and centered on the offset like the OEM Bomber wheels. Short course format with 1/8 scale beads, and they're CHEAP!!! Look into them. As for the new CI foams, anything resemble 80-100 psi in your tires?

Also consider the Team Associated Nomad DB8 Desert Buggy General Grabber copy tires... Mounted up they are 132mm tall, or about 5.25". They are on 2.2"/3.0" Short Course wheels with 17mm hexes on the Nomad, but if you bought the tires separately you could mount them on some 12mm hex SC wheels. Louise RC (the company that also makes DuraTrax branded tires) has a set of tallish 1/8th tires as well... The Louise T-Apollo 1/8th truggy wheel/tire combo, 140mm tall (that's slightly over 5.5") 17mm hex. Associated Nomad wheels/tires: Louise T-Apollo wheels/tires: |

I didn't know how tall those General Grabbers were, nice. Time to find a set.

Sweet, I need short course wheels for my exo and I'm planning on 17mm hexes anyway. Time to rustle up a set of nomads.

2.8 monster truck tires are similar in height to a lot of the 1.9 & smaller 2.2 tires and come with stiff enough foams to work well on harder surfaces. Of course, there's always the CI Deuces Wild foam option too. I run the Deuces Wild foams in my Yeti tires and they work very well on harder surfaces. |
