I want less grip? Okay, so I know this is going to be a strange thread but here we go. So I have a Traxxas TRX-4 and it is great, however, I want a harder tire with less grip... I have a lot of different tires and they are all geared towards grip. I want something hard that will get stuck and give me more of a challenge. I am looking for a thin tire that is still a normal 1.9 height. Anyone have any experience with poor grip tires? Or something that is more realistic like a trail tire. Not opposed to cheap chinese tires. I currently have: Traxxas Canyon Trail, Redcat Irok Super Swampers, Axial BFG A/T KO2, Pro-line hyrax. These are all 1.9 tires. Thanks for any suggestions! |

Re: I want less grip? Any RC4WD X3 compound or Axial S30 compound RTR tires. Although I'm surprised, you thought Axial BFG KO2s had too much grip. |
Re: I want less grip? I second looking at RC4WD tires, as they have many realistic tread design tires in retro patterns - often made from harder rubber compounds. If you have a Defender, then many of the military-style tires would be a great choice and would look great, to boot... Stick to scale diameter (not overly large) to add to the difficulty. If it's a Bronco, try something like the RC4WD Interco Ground Hawg II which is what was popular on the real 1:1 Broncos in those days... |

Re: I want less grip? How about you just go to a smaller tire if you want more of a challenge? All the tires you currently have are like 40 inch tires on a real D110, something around 4 inches tall in an all terrain pattern would be more like a stock Land Rover. |
Re: I want less grip? As already mentioned, SMALLER tires for the win. If you want to train yourself to drive better, 4.19" Tires and smaller are a teacher. Think of anything taller as training wheels for your driving. Also, stiffer foams will prevent the tire from conforming to the surface terrain, resulting in slippage, and more reliance upon the tread pattern design and the rubber compound. Thin walled rubber tires conform better, so if you want slippage or a challenge, using a thick walled, heavily re-inforced, or poor compound rubber tire will challenge you. |
Re: I want less grip? I agree with smaller tires. On the other hand, personally I use Pit Bull Mad Beast with Deuces Wild foams inside (fantastic combination imo) for more of a challenge. Not because they are bad in any way, but in wet forest, slimy rocks and mud, they definitely provide more of a challenge than the more popular tires out there. And they are thin and look awesome! Re: I want less grip? Axial tires suck. You want worse than those? :shock: I think you are trying to compensate for terrain that is too mild for your truck. Find a more challenging place to run. |
Re: I want less grip? I agree that you'll want to stick with Axial S30 compounds or the Pitbull Mad Beasts. I have a TRX-4 Defender and found Axial S30 BFGoodrich All-Terrain T/A KO2s and PitBull Mad Beasts in the Komp Kompounds to be difficult to drive in the creek beds or dry dirt that I drive in. They looked cool enough, but struggled - especially on damp rocks. I did it for the challenge. I've never had a set, but I would take a guess that RC4WD Falken Wildpeak A/T 1.9"s would also struggle. |

This, I don't get the current trend of huge mall-crawler tires on portal axles. Get a TrailFinder2 on 1.55s if you want a challenge. Or a MST CMX/CFX if you don't feel like painting a hardbody or don't like the bounciness of leaf springs. The last time I went crawling in a group I laughed my ass of when my stock CMX would take obstacles that made Defender TRX4s roll over. |

Re: I want less grip? ill agree, "tiny tires make better drivers" -Dave < my buddy said it best. ive got a set ive pretty much grown out of. find a cheap set of 4.19 or smaller tires and run a stiffer foam setup in them. once you get good with those shoes, it will be time to dive into fine tuning your suspension. though, there is not much you can do with link placement on a trx4 axle. shocks and wight placement is where you should start after the tires. |

I have discovered what many others have said is good for a challenge: shorter wheelbase and 4.19 (or smaller) tires. I also have a Barrage on which I run 1.55" RC4WD Dick Cepak Fun Country tires. Certainly requires more attention to drive in places which don't come close to taxing the TRX-4. |

Re: I want less grip? C1 or bust "thumbsup" Small 1.9 or 1.7 < 4.19 Inch and larger 1.55 tires, thats where the action are. large 1.9 or god forbid even 2.2 tires are nice too, but we need larger cars for that, otherwise its just overkill. |
