3.8 Rock Crawler Tires?

I recently installed some Pitbull Rock Beast XOR 2.2 tires on my son's Everest 10 and holy cow I'm amazed at what those tires can do. The downside is that it made me realize how crappy my stock tires are on my Exceed Mad Torque. I'm aware that nobody makes a 2.8 tire except exceed so i've been looking at changing out to 3.8 tires since they use the same hex size. The trouble I'm having is that all the 3.8 tires I can find have medium soft or harder compound rubbers. I've been eyeing the Rock Beast XL 3.8's but they have a harder compound than the XOR's so i'm not sure they would be any better than my current tires. Any suggestions on a 3.8 tire for crawling? I know somebody made a review about the exceed 3.8 tires, but i'm kind of skeptical of those as they look very similar to the stock Everest 10 tires, which suck!

That's the standard for 3.8 size tires - medium to hard compounds. That's because the vehicles that run that size are not true "rock-crawlers", but high-speed bashers. The manufacturers don't have enough buyers looking for a soft compound crawling tire, and they'd end up with unsold stock. RC4WD makes a few rock-crawler tread pattern 3.8" tires, but they also come only in the harder compounds:

What about using tall 2.2 tires? Some of the tallest 2.2’s are just about the same diameter as the exceed tires.


I love the exceed crawler tires for high speed stuff. They barely balloon at all and have excellent traction. ...but not for crawling.

17mm hub Motoworx wheels. Expensive but awesome.


Or you can cut the inner bead of the tire to fit on SC wheels. ...or ,I know the Mad Torque uses 17mm hubs, but they’re a slip on adapter to a smaller axle. I’m not sure what size that axle is but I’d bet there’s an adapter for it so you can run 12mm hex wheels

I've thought about going that route. What tires are those? I've looked at the super swamper XL

Is the super swamper really a true crawler tire or is it a slightly harder compound? Who makes a super soft tall 2.2 tire?

2.2 Duratrax ShowDowns are really tall 2.2’s as well, and they are soft.

Jconcepts Ruptures in 2.2 are nearly 6 inches tall and come in a nice, soft compound.

try the 3.8 super swampers with some groves cut. they should do fine. maybe think about getting a set of C.I. foams if they still have the comp cut single stage foams in stock.

I'll tell you from experience that the M2 compound used in the 3.8" Pro-line tires is also quite firm - it's listed as medium in the Pro-line rubber compound chart, and I have a set of the 2.8" Badlands MX tires on my Nomad in the same compound. They are much harder than any of my crawler tires... (just sayin')

What type of terrain are you going to be running this rig on?

That may help in choosing a tire tread design, which can help in making a harder compound tire still crawl OK.

For example, trimming alternate lugs out of the Baja Claws will give a pretty good tire design.

Also, there's quite a variety in tire OD with all these - the RC4WD Baja MTZ are a full 8" tall, the Pro-line Swampers are 6.7", the RC4wd Baja Claws are 7", and RC4WD does make a huge TSL Bogger that has an OD of a full 9.7" and (guess what!) actually comes in a what's likely the softest compound of all these tires.

It's a freakin' gigantic tire, though...and they left out the sidewall reinforcement to make it even softer - the trick is, can your rig actually deal with such a tire?

Would you even want 6" wide and nearly 10" tall tires?

So I've been mostly riding in solid sandstone rock, boulders, slickrock with some sandy areas. I'll post a pic tomorrow for you. My current exceed tires are actually a decent tire in my limited experience. They have a decent tread too but they're just quite firm... and yeah I dont think I want a 9 inch tire, haha. Oh and there are also lots of rock ledges and step ups so the ground clearance is a concern still

You could pick up the Team Losi Maxxis Creepy Crawlers, they are basically 6" tall and quite grippy.

They are the Rock Rey standard tire, and there's a set of take-offs for sale on the forum right now (normally they are overpriced - $49.99 a pair, tires only!)...

I have a set mounted on Gearhead RC wheels and they work great in the mixed gravel and rocky ledge terrain I use them for- you'll need to run adapters for 12mm hex.

From their website the scorpios and ruptures are just under 6 inches. From the research I've done it seems the ruptures are a better tire. Is that a general consensus? Problem is they're out of stock and the scorpios are in stock. Also is it safe to conclude that I'm not going to find a soft compound 3.8 tire then, aside from the monster sized bogger?

Sure would like a scaler where tires this size appear as small factory tires or ever so slightly larger after market tires, something that fit inside the wheel wells of a big ass scaler.

Nobody has mentioned the Axial Falken Wildpeak 3.8 tire yet. The website says it is made with the R35 compound, but i've read there are two R35 compounds they make, one with a white dot and one that comes on the RTR trucks that is much harder. I can't tell which compound these tires would be. Anyone know anything about this tire? If its a soft grippy compound, this could be the tire I'm looking for. Also, I'm having a hard time finding a 17mm to 12mm hex adapter online. Anyone ever made the conversion on the Mad Torque before? I'll keep looking.

I don't think they'll be soft, I have the 3.8 BFG Krawlers and they don't feel anything like the 2.2 tires in terms of softness, and they really couldn't because of the lug size and the need to handle 30+ mph speeds.

Is cut and shut a viable option or do they end up not working very well in the long run? I'm considering purchasing some Rockbeast XOR's and cutting and filling them to fit the odd 2.8" wheels that came on the mad torque. The width of the tire isn't too much narrower than the stock tires so I think it might be a good candidate.

A clean tire set and clean tire parts will work well for cut n shut.
