If you want the cheap route take 5.5's and pump them up. Will be very bouncy though

If your competing in scale 2.2 or trail class will generally be 5.5 in./ 140mm max height. To be honest with you, sometimes that is pretty high. I would have to believe the same is in comp crawling. There is no advantage to a larger tire.

6 inches tall is the maximum legal tire height for 2.2 competition under USRCCA rules. Crawler Innovations offers custom tires. Just about any tire combination you can think of can be done. If someone is interested they can PM or email me for details. Crawler Innovations is also now testing a 6 inch tall dual stage and triple stage foam.

I don't agree...for 2.2 comp rig there can be a advantage..axle clearence! Even if you lower you belly to keep the cg low it's still worth some extra axle clearence my .02 |

The other issue with maximum height tires is the change in link geometry. As the tire raises your Center of Gravity, if you counter act that by lowering the truck, it stretches out your wheel base. If you lower the truck by changing the shock mounting and lay them down to get the truck lower, it changes the way the truck reacts on the rocks. I personally am not convinced a 6 inch tire is best. Especially with the new Axial coming out and the increased ground clearance it offers under the axle with a standard 5.5 tall tire. Some of the Team C.I. drivers have been testing 6 inch tall tires. They work in certain situations on certain terrain. The biggest problem is set up. In order to get the most from the tall tire, the truck needs to be set up for it. But if you are at a comp, and your truck is set up for 6 inch tall tires, and you need to switch to a 5.5 tall tire in a different compound or tread pattern, what do you do? You would have to change the set up to your 5.5 tall set up. So there in lies the problem. Unless you can afford to have two identical trucks set up for different height tires.

But you can't switch trucks in the middle of a comp. I can see some distinct advantages to the taller tires, but like said, you have to set your truck up for them to get the most out of them.

in what i have found you would only need to switch shocks, and maybe move an upper link position. if you get your truck working with them really well it should be able to handle most terrain depending on the tire selection. that is why i went with the rovers, they have proven themselves to be the most versatile in my opinion. in the end they are not for everyone. they take some tuning and some getting used to but to say there is no advantage is not entirely true... |
